Ayacucho is arguably Peru’s most fascinating Andean town after Cuzco. It was founded by the Spanish in 1539 and most of its architecture is Colonial. It is much less visited than Cuzco and therefore less commercialized. Points of interest include the Ruins of the Wari empire, a pre-Inca civilization, and the site where the Battle of Ayacucho, the battle of independence, was fought.

Ayacucho is a must during Holy Week, the week before Easter, where Peru’s largest religious festival is held. An extension of Ayacucho will take you to the ruins of Vilcashuaman, considered to be the geographical center of the Inca empire, and the Ruins of Intihuana, with its thermal baths.

Day 1

Upon arrival at the airport, transfer to your hotel. Afternoon city tour of Ayacucho, to visit the landmark buildings, colonial houses, churches, museums, handicraft markets and the city viewpoint.

Day 2

Visit to the pre-Inca ruins of Wari, where we will see entire streets and squares. Afternoon visit to the historical town of Quinua, with its museum about the famous Battle of Ayacucho and its handicraft markets. Later, we will visit the Pampa of Quinua, where the Battle of Ayacucho was fought. Typical lunch included. In the afternoon, we head toward the cave of Piquimachay. According to certain theories, this is where the remains of the first man in America were found. We will observe the excavations that were made by the archeologists. Then we will visit Huanta, or the “Emerald of the Andes,” with its majestic church, market and museum. Evening return to Ayacucho.

Day 3

We depart early in the morning to visit the ruins of Intihuana, an archeological complex on the shores of an artificial lagoon. We will see a palace which was used by Inca rulers to rest when they traveled from one end of the empire to the other. We will also see the Bath of the Inca and the stone with the 17 corners. Afternoon visit to the ruins of Vilcashuaman, which was once an administrative center for the Inca empire, with its Temple of the Sun and Temple of the Moon and the Ceremonial Pyramid, among others. Evening, return to Ayacucho.

Day 4

Transfer to the airport to take the flight to Lima.
