Begin your visit to South Africa with a tour of Cape Town, Table Mountain and the Cape Peninsula including the penguin colony at Boulder’s Bay. Then, head out to Swellendam, Plettenberg Bay, Knysna and Port Elizabeth on the famed Garden Route, recognized for the forests, coastline, beaches, marine life & game reserves, as well as the picturesque towns and villages along the way. Finish with a day safari from Port Elizabeth where you will experience an excellent introduction to Big Five game viewing.

Though the Garden Route was named after the vineyards, orchards and agricultural areas that used to sit between the Karoo Desert and the Southern South Africa coastline, it has come to be known for the forests, coastline, beaches, marine life and game reserves (as well as the picturesque towns and villages along the way). We start off in Swellendam, the gateway to the Garden Route, before transferring on to Plettenberg Bay from there. Originally christened “Bahia Formosa” (beautiful bay) by early Portuguese explorers, Plettenberg Bay offers the visitor miles of sweeping, unspoilt golden beaches. It is also home to the best dolphin watching in the world according to National Geographic and is an adventure lover’s paradise with everything from surfing to kayaking and horseback riding. We finish at Port Elizabeth, where you will have the opportunity to experience a safari in the Eastern Cape.

Day 1

Overnight international flight to Cape Town.

Day 2

Upon arrival in Cape Town, airport reception and transfer in a private vehicle to your hotel. After check in enjoy the remainder of the evening at leisure.

Day 3

Today we will start by helping you get your bearings in Cape Town and filling you in on some of the city’s history and culture on a private city tour. Keep your eyes and ears open for seldom seen sights and seldom heard stories about the city’s former inhabitants; previous visitors; beautiful architectural heritage; social, cultural, religious and political history.

In the afternoon we will make our way to the Cable Car Station for a memorable trip to the top of Table Mountain, one of the Natural Wonders of the World. The views of the city, coastline and Cape Peninsula are in a word: breathtaking. Enjoy one of the many walks on top of the mountain before enjoying a well earned cocktail and watching the sun set.

Day 4

After breakfast you will be taken on a full day, private tour of the Cape Peninsula that showcases some of Cape Town’s best scenery and attractions. You will stop at the Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens. Situated on the eastern slopes of Table Mountain, these beautiful gardens are home to over 6000 species of plants. You will then travel on to visit the Jackass Penguin Colony at Boulders Bay and perhaps have a swim on the beach next door.

After a stop for lunch overlooking False Bay, where you can keep an eye out for whales, you will move on to Cape Point, which is the south'westernmost point of Africa and one of the most dangerous points to sail around in the World. On the way back you can look for wildlife as you travel through Cape Point National Park, before going round Chapman’s Peak Drive and back to your hotel for a sun downer!

Day 5

After breakfast we take a trip to the Winelands region just north of Cape Town. South African wine is one of the fastest growing in popularity and we will take you to some of the best wine makers in the country. You will be able to experience several tastings as well as a private cellar tour. The Winelands region is also incredibly beautiful, with the vineyards woven through spectacular mountain ranges. We will stop for lunch in Franschhoek, which is the gourmet capital of South Africa, to soak up the surroundings while enjoying some first rate cuisine. This is a fantastic day out.

Day 6

Transfer to Swellendam. This is a day at leisure to explore the historic town of Swellendam, take a trip to the southernmost tip of Africa at Cape Agulhus, or explore the vineyards of the Robertson region.

Afternoon transfer to your hotel in Plettenberg Bay (3 hours). After check in, enjoy the remainder of the day at leisure.

Day 7

After breakfast you will be taken to Knysna, where you will have the chance to browse the markets of this bustling town, before being taken out for a boat cruise on the beautiful Knysna Lagoon. On the cruise, you will have a chance to see the infamous Knysna Heads.

After a stop for lunch, we will return to Plettenberg Bay, where we will take a trip on the Ocean Blue whale and dolphin excursion. Plettenberg is known for having some of the best dolphin watching in the world and it is an amazing year-round experience to watch the huge pods playing in the surf and around your boat. If you are lucky you will also see the rare Orca (Killer) Whale (most frequently seen August-October).

Day 8

We start early today and transfer to Port Elizabeth (approximately 2 hours). We will then head straight to Addo National Park, which has an enormous elephant population and is also home to the Big Five 5. This is an excellent introduction to a safari and you are sure to get some superb photos of the wildlife.

Day 9

After breakfast you will be transferred to the airport for your connection to Cape Town and flight home or continue with the Yampu Tours add-on of your choice.

Travelers entering South Africa from WHO-designated yellow fever countries are required to present their current and valid “International Certificate of Vaccination as approved by the World Health Organization (WHO)” (commonly called a “yellow card”) or statement of medical exemption (also located on the same yellow card). Additionally, South Africa treats Zambia and Tanzania as yellow fever countries. This requirement is imposed on travelers flying to South Africa via yellow fever countries, even when transiting passengers are required to stay on board the plane, or if the plane makes an unscheduled landing in a yellow fever country. As a precaution, all travelers to South Africa should carry their original yellow card.

While most of South Africa is malaria-free, malaria risk exists throughout the year in rural low-altitude areas of Limpopo and Mpumalanga provinces, including Kruger National Park and neighboring game reserves. Risk also exists in the coastal lowlands of KwaZulu-Natal north of the Tugela River (including in Zululand, but excluding urban areas of Richards Bay). In all risk areas, risk is much lower from June to September.
