Experience Peru while staying in the most luxurious Orient Express hotels in Lima, Cuzco and Machu Picchu. This trip includes the Miraflores Park Hotel in Peru’s capital, Lima, as well as a tour of Cuzco and stay at the Monasterio Hotel. Then take a train ride on the Hiram Bingham Express to the Inca lost city of Machu Picchu, where you will stay at the amazing Sanctuary Lodge. In Lake Titicaca your base will be the brand new, luxurious Titilaka Hotel. This luxury tour concludes with a tour of Lima’s markets and dinner by the ocean.

Recently, following UNESCO recommendations, Peruvian authorities have placed restrictions on the visitation of Machu Picchu, the lost Incan ruins. Currently, no more than 2,500 people daily will be allowed to visit the ruins. While these new restrictions are great for the preservation of the ruins, they may cause some difficulties in your ability to visit them, so we recommend booking with plenty of notice.

Day 1

Flight to Lima. Upon arrival at the airport, you will be picked up in a private car and transferred with our English-speaking guide to your hotel.

Day 2

Morning private tour of Lima, one of the most important cities in South America since its founding in 1535. Journey through the historic center of the city. Admire the beauty of San Martín and Major squares, the Cathedral, the Government Palace and visit San Francisco Convent, a religious building from the end of the 16th century, and its catacombs. Also drive through the residential districts of San Isidro and Miraflores. After the tour, we will have lunch at a typical cevicheria in Miraflores facing the Pacific Ocean. Afternoon visit to Larco Herrera Museum, Archeological Museum or Gold Museum (see details below). Evening transfer and dinner at one of the best restaurants of typical Peruvian cuisine: Las Brujas de Cachiche.

Day 3

Morning transfer to the airport to take the flight to Cuzco. Upon arrival in Cuzco, transfer to your hotel. Afternoon at leisure to acclimatize. Dinner at the hotel.

Day 4

Morning walking tour of Cuzco. We will visit the Cathedral (hosting some of the finest artwork in all of Peru) and San Francisco Church. We will pass by some of the city’s most colorful streets and Major Square (Plaza de Armas). We will have time to eat lunch before we start the afternoon tour of the Korikancha temple or Temple of the Sun, and the Inca ruins around the city of Cuzco: Tambomachay (Inca Fountains), Puca Pucara (Red Fortress), amphitheater of Kenko and finally the Sacsahuaman Fortress. Afternoon, return to your hotel. Evening, transfer and dinner, and folkloric show at La Tunupa.

Day 5

Morning transfer from your Cuzco hotel to the Poroy train station to board the Hiram Bingham Train to Machu Picchu. The train leaves in the morning, taking a spectacular journey through a changing landscape while you enjoy breakfast. We will pass through the Sacred Valley and its lush fields and colorful villages in the foothills of the Andes. From there, the journey is highlighted by wonderful vistas of the mountains and the beautiful Urubamba River which runs through the Sacred Valley. On arrival in the town of Aguas Calientes at the foot of Machu Picchu, you will be taken by bus to the Machu Picchu Sanctuary Lodge. We will have lunch there, overlooking the ancient citadel. Then, we will have a guided tour of the ruins. Machu Picchu, the Lost City of the Incas, was a flourishing ceremonial and agricultural site, probably the gateway to the jungle marches of the Inca Empire. The central buildings were erected with the polished stone works of the Cuzco Imperial style, though the site was probably occupied well before the Incas started their expansion. It was associated with the earth cult revolving around the coca leaf, which was a privilege of the Inca Royal family and priests. Typical English afternoon tea will be served at the Machu Picchu Sanctuary Lodge. Dinner at the Sanctuary Lodge.

Note: Government regulations limit the number of visitors to Machu Picchu daily. Entrance is subject to availability. Please book with plenty of notice so we may confirm your entrance to the ruins for today and tomorrow.

Day 6

This morning our resident guide will pick you up at your hotel in the morning for a second visit to the Machu Picchu ruins. Optional hike of the Huayna Picchu, please contact your Yampu travel consultant. Early in the evening we will return to Cuzco by Hiram Bingham Train. Cocktails and dinner will be served on board. Upon arrival in Cuzco, transfer to your hotel.

Day 7

Transfer to the airport to take the flight to Lake Titicaca. En route to the hotel, visit the necropolis of Sillustani (12,000 feet above sea level), the lagoon of Umayo and the fabulous “chullpas,” cylinder-shaped tombs. Transfer to your hotel.
Note: You may also take the Andean Explorer train from Cuzco to Puno (10 hour scenic ride), although it operates only on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday. Additional cost of $ 125 per person applies. If you take this option, you will arrive in Puno in the evening so we recommend adding an extra night at Titilaka.

Day 8

Activities at Titilaka. All meals and activities included (see activities below).

Day 9

Morning at leisure. Afternoon transfer to the airport to take the flight to Lima. Upon arrival, transfer to your hotel. Evening farewell dinner at La Rosa Nautica. This restaurant is located on a pier on the shores of the Pacific Ocean with amazing views.

Day 10

Transfer to the airport to take the flight back home, or choose from optional tours in Peru or other South American countries (check-out of the hotel at 12 pm. Late check-out available at an additional cost). If your flight departs in the evening, you will have time for a shopping tour of Lima, visiting the famous handicraft markets accompanied by our guides. You may also visit some of the fascinating art galleries in Barranco or Miraflores.

1. Availability at the Orient Express hotels is very limited. We recommend booking with plenty of advance notice. If we are not able to book some of the hotels, we will request the Libertador Hotel in Cuzco, the Pueblo Hotel in Machu Picchu or the JW Marriott in Lima, and will put you on the waiting list at the Orient Express with a chance of confirmation 30 days prior to arrival. If the Orient Express does not confirm, there will be a price adjustment.
2.The deluxe service Hiram Bingham train features an observation wagon with a bar and two dining cars. In addition, this train includes a gourmet brunch on board, exclusive bus return to Machu Picchu, entrance to Machu Picchu as well as a guided tour. Note: As part of our program, you may either fly from Cuzco or take the fabulous Andean Explorer train on day 7 of the trip. An extra night in Lake Titicaca will be needed if choosing the train option.

Andean Explorer train from Cuzco to Puno or Puno to Cuzco (Monday, Wednesday and Saturday only). A fantastic train ride that takes a gentle climb to higher and cooler altitudes. The first half of the journey is dominated by the magnificent Andean Mountains which tower over the deep valleys of the meandering Huatanay River. It then reaches the gentler, rolling Andean Plains, where vicuńa and alpaca can be seen. The glass-walled observation car provides the perfect opportunity to view the beautiful scenery. The journey is broken by a scenic stop at La Raya, which is also the highest point on the route. Three-course lunch included. Restaurant and bar service is available at an additional cost. Train leaves Cuzco at 8 a.m. and arrives at Puno at 6:00 p.m.

Rowing Around the Reeds
Take a paddle boat tour through the totora reeds on the lake near the hotel. The totora reeds are aquatic plants used by the locals for different purposes ranging from construction to food. Just like land, the reed areas are divided among the villagers, who every so often harvest them for various uses. The reeds also provide a special ecosystem for birds such as wrens, grebes, moorhens and egrets.

Inkanatavi
Your excursion starts with a ride by car towards the south of the Titilaka refuge, then a light ascent on foot to a rocky mountain to reach the remains of an Inca Trail, where some polished stone seats were finely carved in large rocks and you can enjoy the panoramic view of the vast lake. After the descent, visit the local community for a brief rest and view their colorful textiles.

Socca Beach
Walk towards the east of the Titilaka refuge, through a peninsula to visit the rustic town community of Socca. Continue the tour through the wide sandy shores of the Lake Titicaca, between wetlands and farms where you can appreciate the agricultural practices of the locals, know the customs with an opportunity to relax see the unique sceneries around the highest navigable lake of the world.

Bird Watching
Lake Titicaca is part of the RAMSAR Convention on Wetlands, a conservation and protection of the Wetlands and its wild life, where you can see more than 60 species, including waterfowl and shore birds and some others that are found inland. Depending on the season, you can see migratory birds such as flamingos, shorebirds, aquatic birds, among others, and resident birds like a variety of ducks, herons and grebes. Significantly, from the Titilaka Hotel one can see the Titicaca grebes (Rollandia microptera), endemic birds to the Titicaca Basin (Peru and Bolivia) in its natural habitat, which is in danger of extinction according to CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora). The Bird Watching route shall be determined according to the season and location by monitoring the places frequented by these birds.

Half Day Excursions

Uros
Enjoy a guided visit to Uros floating isles on Lake Titicaca, located on the National Reserve of Titicaca on the Bay of Puno. Made from reeds called totora these Islands are home of the Uros community which pre-dates the Incan civilization. They call themselves kot-suńa or people of the lake who claim to have “black blood”, are consequently immune to the cold and consider themselves the owners of the lake and its waters. They continue living on the islands by fishing, weaving and now, tourism.

Titilaka Arch
Take a familiarization walk around the Titilaka Lodge. In this excursion, see the community lifestyle adjacent to the hotel, observing residents in their daily tasks. Then ascend towards a stone arch, which is at the top of a hill from where you can see the landscape and magnificent view of the lake, the communities within and the idyllic environment.

Taquile
Take a boat ride to the island of Taquile, where you can see the beautiful mountain ranges of Cordillera Real of Bolivia and its snow peaks. This traditional island is inhabited by islanders of Quechua origin, as opposed to the majority of population of Puno who are of Aymara origin. Taquile lives in its own world, completely detached from the rest of the world, maintaining their ancient Quechua traditions. Its scenery is stunning, red soil in contrast with the intense blue of the lake, the sky and a striking background of snowcapped mountains of the Cordillera Real. On the higher part of the island are remains of ancient stone buildings, somewhat like quarters and roads. One can also view stone tombs. Enjoy lunch prepared by the Taquile locals. NOTE: Private guide in a shared boat.

Amantani
A few kilometers north of Taquile is the beautiful island of Amantani located in front of the peninsula Capachica. It is almost circular in shape and is the largest island in the Peruvian side of Lake Titicaca. The transfer from Titilaka takes about one hour in a motor boat and as you approach the island, you can see its large mountains with its highest point, the Llacastiti peak. Situated 320 meters above the lake, it has interesting ancient stone structures used during the celebration of their festivals and rituals to Pacha Mama (Mother Earth) honored every year as the source of their sustenance and agricultural livelihood. During the tour of the island get to know the locals of about 800 families, their prime source of living which is farming, producing potatoes, tubers, barley and beans. Due to the existence of granite in Llacastiti, they have developed it as a handicraft.

Sillustani
Enjoy a guided tour in Sillustani, a peninsula facing the Umayo lagoon, a short distance from Puno. It was a burial ground of the Colla tribe that lived in the region long before the Inca expansion. The phallic structures known as Chullpas, which symbolized life and birth, are ancient and impressive tombs from the pre-Inca period, served as burial places for chiefs and important people. Later the site was inhabited by the Incas, who made their own version of these towers. That is why there are two types – the rough, smaller towers, and the smooth, larger ones made by the Incas. The biggest tower took about 50 years to make and consists of rocks weighing anywhere from 2 to 6 tons; an interesting site to visit, with a combination of archaeology, history and rustic landscapes.

Mountain Biking to Inkanatavi
An excursion with a demanding level where you take an approximately two hours ride in mountain bike through the communities around this area of Lake Titicaca, to Inkanatavi, chosen name for the remains of an Inca Trail built on the edge of a rocky mountain. The ascent up the Inca Trail is moderate and may have some difficulty after riding the bike; the view from the top is privileged and near the Inca Trail some seats were finely carved into a rock. After the descent you may take some refreshing snacks to recharge the energies spent and return by private car to the hotel.

Local Festival
Puno is the folkloric capital of Peru, a fusion of Catholic and Andean beliefs which have created an intense tradition of festival celebration as part of its culture and customs. Perka (August 2008)
Start the excursion heading towards the totora reeds near Titilaka refuge sailing towards the west, observing these aquatic plants that are still utilized by the locals in their daily tasks. Continue to the shores of the peninsula of Chucuito, with an opportunity to see shore birds such as ducks, the Andean seagulls, flamingos and grebes and then visit homes of the locals and their nearby farmlands. Perka is a quiet community that practically does not have any connection with tourism but it is possible to enjoy its beaches and to enjoy some aperitifs on the shores of the lake in a relaxing peaceful ambience.

Full Day Excursions

Inkanatavi, Juli and Pomata
The excursion begins with Inkanatavi taking a van heading towards the south of the Titilaka refuge and then climb on foot to the rocky mountain, to reach an interesting Inca Trail ruins, where has polished seats carved in large rocks, and you can enjoy a stunning panoramic view of Lake Titicaca. After the descent, visit the local community for a break and appreciate its colorful textiles. Continue the journey south to visit the beautiful colonial churches of Juli and Pomata, which were the center of evangelization of the highland plateaus. The churches have striking architecture, gold-leafed altars, still maintain remarkable paintings from the viceroyalty era and massive bells that still toll up to today.
