This Yampu tour begins with 2 days in Lima, and 4 days in Cuzco and Machu Picchu before traveling deep into the Amazon to the Inkaterra Reserva Amazonica. Reserva Amazonica is the most luxurious and romantic lodge in the Peruvian Amazon. Located in the heart of the Amazon Rainforest, and adjacent to the Tambopata National Park, the Reserva Amazonica was built in 1975 by Peru’s eco-pioneers, José and Denise Koechlin. The lodging is surrounded by a 40-square-mile private ecological reserve with abundant wildlife, encompassing two-thirds of all the living animal and plant species in the world. Here the flora and fauna ranges from giant and colorful macaws, to owls and tamarind monkeys.

Recently, following UNESCO recommendations, Peruvian authorities have placed restrictions on the visitation of Machu Picchu, the lost Incan ruins. Currently, no more than 2,500 people daily will be allowed to visit the ruins. While these new restrictions are great for the preservation of the ruins, they may cause some difficulties in your ability to visit them, so we recommend booking with plenty of notice.

This trip can be customized to fit your individual travel dates and any specific requests you may have. Your travel consultant will prepare a customized itinerary for you. We offer a choice of 3, 4, 5-star and deluxe hotels. The Deluxe option comes with the following Orient Express hotels: the Sanctuary Lodge in Machu Picchu, Monasterio in Cuzco and the Park Plaza in Lima. You may also choose to upgrade to the luxury Hiram Bingham train from Cuzco to Machu Picchu.

This tour includes airfare allowance from Miami (US), on non-holiday dates. You do not need to fly via Miami; Yampu will fly you the most direct way to your city of destination. Depending on your travel dates and proximity of travel, we will quote you the most economical surcharge from your city or country of origin.

Day 1

Overnight flight to Lima.

Day 2

Upon arrival, transfer to your hotel. Afternoon tour of Lima. Lima has always been one of the most important cities in South America since its founding in 1535. We will visit famous landmarks such as the San Francisco Monastery and its unique cloisters, the Plaza de Armas with the Goverment Palace and the Cathedral, and the Court of the Inquisition. Note: check-in is normally after 2 pm. Early check-in may be granted subject to availability (not confirmed).

Day 3

Morning transfer to the airport to take us to Puerto Maldonado in the Amazon rainforest. Arrival at Puerto Maldonado Airport, where you will be transferred to the river port. Set out on outboard motorboat down the Madre de Dios River to Reserva Amazonica (45 minutes). Welcome, check-in and lunch at the lodge. On your first day, we recommend a guided walk along the Trail system into the Inkaterra Reserva Amazonica natural area. In the evening, we may take a cruise on the Madre de Dios River, watching day turn to night as the animals and birds of the daytime give way to species specially adapted to the night. Dinner at the lodge, and evening nature presentations on Amazonian topics. Overnight at Reserva Amazonica.

Day 4

Rest in bed or rise early. Breakfast begins at 5:30 a.m. to avoid the heat and enjoy nature at its fullest. We may then start with a visit to the Sandoval Lake in the Tambopata National Reserve. After lunch, we could take the Inkaterra Canopy Walk. You may also extend your excursion to appreciate the sunset from one of the towers. Return to the lodge. Enjoy cocktails in the main dining room or during the daily nature presentation in the Eco-Media Center. Dinner at 7:30 p.m.

Day 5

We may enjoy a trip to Gamitana Creek, 45 minutes by boat from the Inkaterra lodge. We will also visit the Gamitana Farm where we will enjoy a picnic lunch. It is recommended to take a short guided tour to see how local farmers raise fruits and vegetables. We can take an afternoon at leisure to relax and take in the sounds of the rainforest, or enjoy a treatment at the ENA Spa (additional cost).

Day 6

Tropical breakfast buffet. We will return to Puerto Maldonado, where we will visit the Butterfly Farm. Transportation to the airport for flight back to Cuzco. Upon arrival in Cuzco, transfer to your hotel. Afternoon city tour of Cuzco, visit the Korikancha Temple or Temple of the Sun and the Cathedral and its Art Museum. After your visits, you will continue to the nearby water shrine of Tambomachay (the Inca Fountains), Puca Pucara (the Red Fortress), the amphitheater of Kenko and finally the Sacsahuaman Fortress. After the tour, return to your hotel.
Note: Because of the altitude in Cuzco, we recommend that this tour be done privately at your own pace, at an additional cost of $28 per person, based on two people.

Day 7

Morning transfer to the train station. Train takes us through the Sacred Valley of the Incas up to the town of Aguas Calientes. From here, we will board a bus to the mountain-top citadel of Machu Picchu. We will then have a guided tour of the ruins. Machu Picchu, the Lost City of the Incas, was a flourishing ceremonial and agricultural site, probably the gateway to the jungle marshes of the Inca empire. The central buildings were erected with the polished stone works of the Cuzco Imperial style, though the site was probably occupied well before the Incas started their expansion. It was associated with the earth cult revolving around the coca leaf, which was a privilege of the Inca royal family and priests. You will have time to enjoy a light lunch or snack, and return to your hotel at your leisure. In the evening we will have a wonderful dinner at the hotel or in the village of Aguas Calientes.

Note: Government regulations limit the number of visitors to Machu Picchu daily. Entrance is subject to availability. Please book with plenty of notice so we may confirm your entrance to the ruins.

Day 8

Day at leisure. You may choose to return to Machu Picchu, hike Huayna Picchu or relax in the village of Aguas Calientes and its hot springs. In the afternoon, we will board the train to return to Cuzco. Upon arrival, train station reception and transfer to your hotel.

Note: Entrance tickets to Machu Picchu on this day are not included. Please contact your Yampu travel consultant if you think you would like to go back to the ruins or hike the Huayna Picchu at time of booking (subject to availability).

Day 9

Transfer to the airport to take the flight to Lima. Upon arrival in Lima, transfer to your hotel. Afternoon shopping tour of Lima, taking you to the famous handicraft markets accompanied by our guides.

Day 10

Transfer to the airport to take the flight back home or overlap with the add-on of your choice.

Short 2-3 hour trips

Trail System

Walk along to one of the trails that extend eight kilometers (6 miles) in Reserva Amazonica Natural Reserve and you will discover the incredible realm of the Amazon rain forest. The trails offer an excellent introduction to the environment of the jungle, as you walk past exotic rain forest trees, such as the lupuna tree and the beautiful ficus.
Look down, and spot the tiny lizards that rustle the leaves as they dart about on the forest floor. Gaze at the treetops, and be amazed at the arena for bird watching. Observe the insect life – iridescent beetles and interpretation of the primary and secondary rain forest components, as well as human impact, and the relevance of the rain forests of the world.

Twilight River

On this guided afternoon boat ride, you will witness the enchanting transformation from a diurnal to nocturnal environment, as animals and birds of the daytime are replaced by species specially adapted to the night. Search for nightjars, owls, capybara and caiman, learning about their habits as you share their paradise.
On a clear night the stars of the southern hemisphere seem to stretch on forever against the deep black sky.

Rainforest by Night
After the sun goes down, the rainforest becomes an entirely different realm. Take a two-hour interpreted walk into the Amazonian eco-system, following the trails at Inkaterra’s ecological reserve. You will learn to interpret the jungle by night, listening to amazing nocturnal sounds as you become aware of the animal species that emerge after dark. Learn why, and how, some creatures come alive while the rest of the world sleeps. Duration: 1/4 day. Difficulty Level: I. Attractions: Footprints / Birds / Astronomy.
Butterfly House
Spend an hour at Inkaterra’s Butterfly House in Puerto Maldonado, and come face-to-face with the butterflies of Peru and Tambopata. Our region is home to more butterflies than any other place on earth. You will see many of them here, in a naturalized habitat full of flowers and tropical plants. Learn about the amazing adaptability of the butterfly, and simply enjoy the graceful beauty of these colorful insects. Located near the airport, the Butterfly House also includes a reception area as well as a café. Duration: Ľ day. Difficulty Level: I. Attractions: Butterflies.

Native Farm

A 15-minute boat ride takes you to a nearby farm, for a look at the complicated yet interesting techniques necessary for successfully farming in the rain forest habitat.
Be prepared for an exotic taste surprise, as local vegetables and fruits will be sampled to complete the experience.

Half Day trips

Canopy and Anaconda Walk

A five-minute boat ride takes you to the Canopy Inkaterra Interpretation Center. After ascending the first tower, at 30 meters above the forest floor, you will literally walk through the treetops for one and a half hours along suspension bridges that link eight observation platforms. Enjoy landscapes and vistas that would be unimaginable from below, while on the look-out for giant strangler fig trees, orchids, toucans, woodpeckers, trogons and –with luck- monkeys or sloths. After your descent from the Canopy, experience the Anaconda Walk for about 30 minutes along the 200-meter wooden bridge over the Aguajales swamps. In this lush eco system, you may observe the various species of amphibians, serpents, birds, mammals and abundant flora and trees of this flooded marshland. The walk finishes by returning to the lodge.

Lake Sandoval
A 30-minute boat ride takes you to the Tambopata National Reserve, where wildlife surrounds you as you enjoy the one and a half hour walk to Lake Sandoval. Glide in a wooden canoe, across a beautiful, mirror-like oxbow lake that is home to the endangered giant river otter, as well as red howler monkeys, macaws, anacondas, point-tailed palm creepers and side-neck turtles. Relax and take it all in. We’ll spend two hours on the lake, so you can fully appreciate all that Sandoval has to offer. Duration: 1/2 day. Difficulty Level: II. Concepcion

A 35-minute ride upriver takes you to Concepcion, home to a remarkable Botanical Garden with over 200 different species of rainforest plants. An in-depth explanation familiarizes you with the processing, uses and benefits of these traditional indigenous plants, including fascinating native medicinal uses. Next, take a 30-minute canoe trip on a small lake and watch for wildlife – turtles, giant river otters, sun grebes, nightjars and herons. The activity ends at Concepcion Educational Research Facility where exhibits, designed by the National Geographic Society, tell the story of the remarkable Madre de Dios region.

Ese’ Eja Experience

Visit an Ese’ Eja family. Twenty minutes transfer by boat. Walk through the island to reach the Ese’ Eja house.
Introduction of an Ese’ Eja community member to learn about their costumes with simultaneous translation of the Inkaterra interpreter. Return to the lodge by boat.

Native Community

After traveling by boat for one and a half hours towards the Bolivian Border, you arrive at the Palma Real native village, home to some 70 Ese’ Eja families.
A two-hour visit offers you an insight into the traditions and culture of this indigenous ethnic group, whose simple dwellings inspired the design of the Reserva Amazonica lodge. You will learn their lifestyle and livelihood, hunting and farming techniques, and the challenges the Ese’Eja face in a changing world.

Gamitana Creek
A 35-minute motorboat ride from the lodge takes you to the magic world of Gamitana Creek. The sights, scents and sounds of the jungle will surround you as you walk for two and a half hours, rambling through the rain forest along the banks of this winding, dark-water creek that is home to piranha, caimans, turtles and an abundance of brightly colored birds. When you reach the embarkation point, board a canoe and navigate your way back downstream, appreciating the rich plant and animal life along the way. You will return to Gamitana Farm in time for a well earned picnic lunch, followed by a short guided tour to learn about the workings of this farm.

Following a short motorboat ride from the lodge, this activity begins with a walk to Lake Sandoval. Be on the lookout for hoatzin, herons and ospreys as you glide across this mirror-like oxbow lake in a wooden canoe. Your excursion continues with a hike through the reserve to Concepcion. The surrounding vegetation offers possible sightings of paiche and black caimans; hoatzins, herons and ospreys; red howler, brown capuchin and squirrel monkeys; and the extremely rare and critically endangered giant river otter. A picnic lunch at Concepcion farm is followed by a guided visit to a garden containing more that 200 medicinal plants. Perhaps you would like to practice archery with native bows and arrows.
