This tour includes the must-see destinations in Peru and Colombia: Lima, Cuzco, Machu Picchu and Cartagena, ending in the amazing Tayrona National Park. The Park is an unspoiled region with white Caribbean beaches; solitary bays; coral reefs and mangroves all at the foothills of the Sierra Nevada.

Cuzco, the ‘Archeological Capital of the Americas’, was the former capital of the Inca Empire. It is a small city embedded in the Andes range, and a beautiful blend of Inca and Spanish cultures. And Lima, the capital of Peru, is also known as the City of Kings for its wonderful colonial architecture and beauty.

Cartagena is one of the most fascinating cities in the Caribbean and was once the “Jewel of the Spanish Crown.” Experience the history of pirate assaults, the workings of the dreaded Tribunal of the Inquisition, and imagine the stories of the writer Gabriel Marquez. Cartagena is known for its friendly, diverse people, architectural beauty, stunning Caribbean coast and the warm evening winds. Note: The beaches are not spectacular in Cartagena, and we recommend adding a few days on an island to enjoy a truly breathtaking Caribbean beach.

The main entrance to Tayrona National Park is at El Zaino which takes you to beautiful bays, unspoilt beaches, coral reefs, lush vegetation, mangroves and mountains. The Tayrona, descendants of the Chibcha, were one of the most advanced pre Columbian cultures and lived for centuries in the Sierra Nevada. The Tayrona were skilled engineers, and channeled water from the mountains to their houses, as well as cultivated terraces to avoid erosion. An excellent representation of the Tayrona’s ingenuity is in Pueblito which contains many bridges, canals, terraces and ceramics that were created by the Tayrona.

Recently, following UNESCO recommendations, Peruvian authorities have placed restrictions on the visitation of Machu Picchu, the lost Incan ruins. Currently, no more than 2,500 people daily will be allowed to visit the ruins. While these new restrictions are great for the preservation of the ruins, they may cause some difficulties in your ability to visit them, so we recommend booking with plenty of notice.

This trip can be customized to fit your individual travel dates and any specific requests you may have. Your travel consultant will prepare a customized itinerary for you. We offer a choice of 3, 4, 5-star and deluxe hotels. The Deluxe option comes with the following Orient Express hotels: the Sanctuary Lodge in Machu Picchu, Monasterio in Cuzco and the Park Plaza in Lima. You may also choose to upgrade to the luxury Hiram Bingham train from Cuzco to Machu Picchu.

Our deluxe option in Cartagena is the Quadrifoglio. However, this city has many small hotels in the old part which are in the price range of 5 star and deluxe. Please let your travel consultant know if you prefer these boutique hotels. Accommodation in Tayrona National Park is in Ecohabs, round ecologically-friendly thatched roof two floor cabins on a stone base in the style of Tayrona Indian architecture. All Ecohabs have private bathrooms. Please inquire about these options with one of our Travel Consultants.
