Montevideo, Colonia and Estancia San Pedro de Timote
First settled by the Spanish and Portuguese as a mercantile and military base, Montevideo soon came to be Río de la Plata’s main port. Now known for its high quality of life, as well as its rich cultural heritage, Montevideo is a “must-see” for travelers. Colonia falls into this same category. Historic and well preserved, you are certain to lose yourself on its stone-paved streets. Your trip will end at San Pedro de Timote, Uruguay’s most prestigious estancia.
Declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1995, Colonia’s historic quarter is almost otherworldly. The Street of Sighs, the city gate (and its original wooden drawbridge), the bullring, the Viceroy’s house, the Portuguese Museum and Iglesia Matriz, the oldest church in Uruguay are just some of its highlights. Well preserved and full of charm, you’re sure to lose yourself on its stone-paved streets just as you’re sure to end your trip on a good note at San Pedro de Timote, one of the country’s oldest and most prestigious estancias.
Owned by the Jesuits up until 1776, and declared a National Historical Monument in 1997, Estancia San Pedro de Timote is at once stately and rustic, with vast grounds, architecture straight out of Andalusia, horseback riding, a sauna, three pools (one outdoor, two indoor) and manifest authenticity.
