Located a 25 minute motor canoe ride down the River Madre de Dios from Puerto Maldonado, Sandoval Lake Lodge is a perched above what many rainforest specialists feel is the most attractive lake in southern Peru, if not the entire Peruvian Amazon. The whole complex is housed in one structure and includes 25 double occupancy rooms (all with private baths), hot showers and a spacious dining room overlooking the lake.
No other lodge in the Tambopata-Madidi is on the banks of a protected oxbow lake. The Sandoval Lake Lodge is built out of ecologically-correct driftwood mahogany and is owned jointly by a non-profit conservation group and five families of indigenous Brazil nut collectors.

Go Back To Sandoval Lake Lodge
Day 1
Lima/Cuzco – Puerto Maldonado – Sandoval Lake Lodge
Today you will take your flight from Lima or Cuzco to Puerto Maldonado. Upon arrival you will be greeted for airport reception and transferred to the river port on the Madres de Dios River. A 25 minute journey down the Madre de Dios River by motor canoe brings you to the beginning of the trail to the Sandoval Lake Lodge. From here, the trail will take you on a 2-mile walk or rickshaw ride through secondary forest, until reaching a small canal where you will board canoes that are paddled 220 yards through a flooded forest of 100 foot tall Mauritia palms. As the canal opens onto the shimmering surface of the lake you will transfer to a catamaran and be paddled leisurely across half of the lake to the lodge.
After lunch and some time at leisure you will board the catamaran to explore the west end of the lake, the location of a flooded palm forest. Here you will drift to the sounds of the red-bellied macaws as they return to the palm forest for the evening. As the evening approaches keep you eye out for the rare black caimans as we return to the lodge for dinner and a short video or slide presentation. After dinner there is the option to enjoy a short, guided walk into the forest behind the lodge.
Day 2
Sandoval Lake Lodge
This morning you will rise before dawn to enjoy the sunrise on Sandoval Lake. While exploring the lake, keep watch for a family of giant otters who frequent the lake and are most active during the early dawn hours. The Sandoval Lake is also home to over 40 species of birds and at this early hour you will be able to watch the water birds as they fish for their breakfast. After enjoying a late breakfast at the lodge, take retreat under the tall Brazil nut trees for a demonstration on collecting, opening and commercializing these important natural products.
After lunch and some time at leisure you will board the catamaran to explore the eastern part of the lake where you will have the opportunity to see the five species of monkeys living here including the brown capuchin monkey.
This evening there is an opportunity after dinner to try and spot some black caimans on the lake or to go on a short night walk through the primary forest.
Day 3
Sandoval Lake Lodge
After a dawn breakfast, cross the lake by catamaran and take a short walk to the interior of the Mauritia palm forest where you will enjoy a brightly colored show put on by parrots, parakeets and macaws. Continuing along the forest trail your guide will explain the ecology of the rainforest and its diverse flora and fauna before returning to the lodge for lunch and some time at leisure.
In the late afternoon you will board the catamaran and explore the eastern end of the lake to enjoy the sunset before dinner at the lodge. After dinner there is a final opportunity to look for the black caiman on the lake or enjoy a brief night hike through the forest.
Day 4
Sandoval Lake Lodge – Puerto Maldonado – Lima/Cuzo
After a dawn breakfast, you will take a final, shorter paddle around the west end of the lake for a final glimpse at the giant otters before returning to Puerto Maldonado via motor canoe (35 minutes). Once at the Puerto Maldonado airport you will board your flight to Lima or Cuzco.
