On this three-day trip, you’ll tour a few carefully selected vineyards and wineries as well as a local dairy farm, where you’ll try out some of South America’s finest, and more obscure, wines and cheeses.

Just to give you basic sense of Uruguayan wines and their context: Tannat is Uruguay’s all-star grape. First brought to Uruguay in 1870 by Basque immigrants, Tannat adapted well to the soil. So well that, though Tannat still grows in France, Uruguay’s variety has taken center stage. With good reason too: Its grapes produce deep, herbal red wines made with blackberries (sometimes blueberries) that Time Magazine has called “marvelously complex” and “beautifully structured.”

Uruguay is now South America’s fourth biggest wine producer behind Argentina, Chile and Brazil, known for Tannat but not with other noteworthy international varieties such as Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah (all reds) as well as Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay (two whites). Wine and artisan cheese production have come to be a great source of national pride, and you’ll find that vineyards, wineries and local, dairy farmers open their doors (and arms) to travelers and locals alike.

In Colonia your overnight accommodation will be at Estancia Finca Piedra, a small, twelve-room ranch that balances rustic charm with comfort expertly. Estancia Finca Piedra is not far from the Mahoma foothills and many of the vineyards that you’ll tour. Its grounds are vast, good for biking, horseback riding and exploring, in general. Later, in Montevideo, you’ll stay at a well known and well respected, 5-Star hotel: Belmont House.
