Tortuguero is one of the wilderness areas with the greatest biological variety in the country. Monkeys, anurans, birds and fish are especially numerous. Tortuguero (which means Turtle in Spanish) is the most important nesting site in the western half of the Caribbean for the endangered green turtle. Program includes two nights at the Pachira Lodge or Mawamba Lodge, located close to the Tortuguero National Park, and near the town of Tortuguero. Surrounded by a network of very scenic canals, this is considered one of the most exotic regions of the world, characterized by its richness in flora and fauna.
Day 1
Pick-up at hotel in San José for transfer to Tortuguero. On the way, you can admire the biodiversity of an astonishing protected area in Costa Rica as we drive by Braulio Carrillo National Park—95 percent of which is a primary forest. We will visit a banana processing and packaging plant, and learn more about one of Costa Rica’s prime products. We will then board a comfortable boat upon arrival at the port to travel along the Tortuguero Canals. Upon arrival at the lodge, enjoy a refreshing cocktail and a delicious lunch. After lunch, we will visit the museum, the beach area and picturesque little town of Tortuguero. A delightful dinner will be served upon arrival at the lodge.
Day 2
Boat Tour to the small canals for wildlife observation. Tortuguero National Park, with its 21,000 hectares of preserved tropical rain forest, provides the best opportunities to experience a wide range of tropical life. In the evening, walk on the beach and admire the green turtles nesting (July through September). All meals included.
Day 3
Enjoy a scenic boat ride back to the Cańo Blanco Port. Take a private transfer to the Arenal Area or back to San José.
