On this Colombia tour, you’ll start out in the town Machete Pelao and make your way to Teyuna (also known as Ciudad Perdida, or Lost City, since it was found again only recently, in 1976). Located at the base of Pico Bolivar and Pico Colon within a national park, Teyuna is home to many species of birds. It’s more occult, more a part of the jungle around it than the rest of the Tayrona ruins. One, old, ruined staircase now leads straight into a waterfall.
Today’s inhabitants, such as the Kogui, Arhuaca and Wiwa, are descendants of the Tayrona and continue to preserve their traditions.
Please note: This trek is far off of the beaten path, and it’s not meant for the faint-hearted. It’s not the distance or altitude that’s challenging so much as the the year-round humidity.
Day 1
Santa Marta – La Casa de Adán
Upon arrival in Santa Marta, you'll depart from Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta and follow the Panamericana highway for about two hours (with an extra hour drive on a dirt road) until you reach the town of Machete Pelao, where the trek starts. You'll cross an agricultural area, where yucca and plantain are grown and then take a swim in El Machete River. After that, you'll have a boxed lunch on the road and continue for about two hours across the secondary jungle to arrive in La Casa de Adán. Upon arrival you'll have dinner. Overnight stay in hammocks South America style.
Day 2
La Casa de Adán – La Casa de Gabriel
After breakfast you'll start in on a six-hour trek across the forest of the Tayrona National Park and the indigenous reserve of the Kogui, descendants of the Tayrona. In the afternoon, you'll take a break for lunch. (Please note: The indigenous villages are used for special meetings and, therefore, sometimes cannot be visited.) In the late afternoon you'll arrive at La Casa de Gabriel and sling up your hammocks. Dinner cooked on an open, camp fire. Overnight stay in hammocks.
Day 3
La Casa de Gabriel – Ciudad Perdida Archaeological Park
After breakfast you'll begin a (roughly) six-hour trek crossing the Buritata river. You'll cross rivers more than a few times during this trek. In the afternoon, you'll take a break for lunch. The last part of the trek is a challenge. You'll go up the 2.000 steps built by the Tayrona to reach the legendary “Ciudad Perdida”. Upon arrival you'll have dinner. Overnight in basic camp style accommodation.
.
Day 4
Parque Arqueológico Ciudad Perdida
After breakfast you'll visit Ciudad Perdida, now considered the nucleus of the Tayrona culture; it probably was the capital of the region. Set on the banks of the Buritaca river, it extends for 2 square kilometers between 2,625 and 4,265 feet above sea level, in the foothills of Cerro Correa. The central part consists of a stairway that starts in the river bank, reaches the mountain top, branches out to the left and the right towards the numerous terraces and platforms that served to build ceremonial centers, houses and storage. The site has been submitted for inclusion in the UNESCO World Heritage List. Lunch and dinner will be served at your camp.
