Founded in the 4th century, this ancient city was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1982 and has the largest number of ancient monuments of the great Sinhala civilization, which has flourished in this region.

Yala National Park is situated in the southeast region of the island in the dry zone bordering the Indian Ocean. All the big game mammals of the country are found within the park such as the elephant, the Sri Lankan leopard and the sloth bear.
