Botswana’s name originates from the main tribe in the region, the Tswana, and the prefix “bo” meaning “country”. Botswana, a former British protectorate, became an independent country in 1966 and already has a relatively stable political system, and one of the most successful economies in Africa. Though 70% of Botswana is covered by the Kalahari Desert, the country has extensive nature preserves and the world’s largest inland delta, the Okavango. Botswana also has many rivers, grasslands and savannahs, and is home to diverse wildlife including the world’s largest concentration of African elephants.
