Enjoy the wildlife of Eastern Africa’s open plains as you visit some of the more popular destinations including Amboseli National Park in Kenya and the Ngorongoro Crater and Serengeti in Tanzania. Top off a wonderful African safari with a short beach extension to the waters of Zanzibar, a culturally rich island off the Tanzanian coast.

After an overnight in Nairobi, begin with a few days in Amboseli. Amboseli, is a small, but distinct national park located in southern Kenya, along the border of Tanzania. What sets Amboseli apart from other parks, and also makes it the third most popular park in Kenya, is its backdrop Mt. Kilimanjaro and its diverse wildlife including antelopes, olive baboons, buffalo, cheetah, elephants, hippos, spotted hyenas, jackals, vervet monkeys, warthogs, and water birds.

The Ngorongoro crater is a large, un-flooded volcanic caldera which formed when a giant volcano exploded and collapsed on itself some two to three million years ago. It is 2000 feet deep and covers 100 square miles. The Crater is often called ‘Africa’s Eden’ and the ‘8th Natural Wonder of the World,’ and is a main draw for tourists coming to Tanzania as well as a definite world-class attraction. Within the crater rim exists large grazing herds of zebra and wildebeest, the endangered black rhino, and some of Africa’s large cats. The game viewing is truly incredible, and the topography and views of the surrounding Crater Highlands out of this world.

Serengeti is easily Tanzania’s most famous national park, and it’s also the largest, at 14,763 square kilometres of protected area that borders Kenya’s Masai Mara Game Park. Its far-reaching plains of endless grass, tinged with the twisted shadows of acacia trees, have made it the quintessential image of a wild and untarnished Africa. Its large stone kopjes are home to rich ecosystems, and the sheer magnitude and scale of life that the plains support is staggering.
The annual wildebeest migration through the Serengeti and the Masai Mara attract visitors from around the world, who flock to the open plains to witness the largest mass movement of land mammals on the planet. More than a million animals make the seasonal journey to fresh pasture to the north, then the south, after the biannual rains.

A fascinating place to visit, Zanzibar is still a mixture of all the historical and cultural influences that have passed through the island over the past 500 years. It may have developed in recent years to welcome tourists onto its powder white beaches but in some ways as you take in the narrow streets of Stone Town or watch the traditional dhow boats heading off to find their daily catch you could be forgiven for thinking that time has stood still.
