Caracas, Angel Falls, Choroní and Los Roques National Park

Caracas was founded by the Spaniard Diego de Losada, sacked by the English in 1595 and by the French in 1766. It gained independence in 1821, when Simón Bolívar freed the country from Spanish domination. The colonial heritage can be found in the city center: departing from Plaza Bolívar which has a classic Spanish symmetrical layout, the Libertador’s equestrian statue in the center and National Guards posted on four sides. Modern Caracas houses a number of skyscrapers built in glass, iron and reinforced concrete that overlook houses and neighborhoods immersed in the green hills which contrast with the “barrios” (shantytowns) where the “ranchos” (shacks) form a huge illuminated nativity-type landscape at night.
Canaima National Park houses the world’s tallest single waterfall, the 3,212 feet high Salto Angel (Falls), named after the pilot Jimmie Angel, who discovered it in 1937. The adventurous North American pilot over flew it on the Flamingo in October, and the airplane’s mechanical problems forced him, his wife and two other passengers on a lucky landing on the top of the Auyantepuy (8,202 ft). Unscathed, they decided to descend the course of the river and after 11 days managed to return to civilization.
Narrow and winding road, crossed by colorful buses loaded with beach goers, will lead you to the colonial town of Choroní, the most beautiful in the park. Choroní was once the heart of a rich cocoa-growing region, with its great “haciendas” run by slave labor. Its population is mainly black and its African roots are particularly evident at night when the streets of Choroní and the neighboring town of Puerto Colombia are filled with people dancing to the sensual music of the “tambores” or drums. Choroní welcomes you to spend a wonderful and relaxing holiday, sunbathing on palm-fringed and secluded beaches and swimming in the warm and clear water of the Caribbean Sea.
Los Roques National Park is blessed with an average temperature of 82 °F all year-round. Sporting activities are available to those who do wish to spend their entire vacation lying on the beach: snorkeling, diving, bonefish and deepwater fishing, windsurfing and ultra light aircraft flights over the archipelago, as well as full day excursions to more remote cays.
