Ready for an adventure and the beach? On this Venezuela tour, you’ll have the chance to tour Caracas, a capital city rife with history and culture; explore the Amazon’s thick, rain forests by boat; relax on remote beaches with pink sand; roam around seaside “pueblitos” surrounded by natural monuments and national parks; and more. Our advice: Go for it.
You’ll begin your tour in Plaza Bolívar—full of history and known for its symmetry and traditional, Spanish layout. Then, after you’ve seen the plaza, the colonial house where Bolívar was born and some of Caracas’s most impressive architecture (the Capitolio, Palacio Legislativo, Palacio Federal and more), you’ll check out some barrios, or shantytowns, set on Caracas’s green hills. The homes in these barrios form an almost otherworldly, nativity-type landscape at night. You’ll continue on to El Hatillo, a small town just outside of Caracas, with a central square surrounded by colonial houses that are now restaurants, bars and artisan shops.
From there, you’ll head to “Los Llanos,” or the plains, where you’ll see local fauna, not to mention some vast, staggering landscapes broken up by llaneros, or cowboys, chasing herds on horseback.
You’ll then set off for the Orinoco River, where you’ll take a motor-powered canoe through the Amazon’s thick rain forests. After you have taken in some of the abounding flora and fauna along the Amazon’s banks, you’ll take a break on a beach, where you can explore or Orinoco dolphin watch.
You’ll wrap up your tour in Morrocoy and Coro. A national park not far from Caracas, Morrocoy is marked by its mangroves; intricate coral; and myriad species of birds, from scarlet ibis to pink flamingoes and crested herons. What’s more, the city of Coro complements Morrocoy well. Part of the Paraguaná Peninsula, in the western region of the country, it is full of century-old towns and seaside “pueblitos” surrounded by natural monuments and national parks. The only trouble with it is that it’s the sort of city that you won’t want to leave.
