El Cocuy National Park
Discover the undiscovered. On this Colombia trip, explore Cocuy, a national park not far from the Venezuelan border that boasts more than a few, stratified ecosystems, many U’Wa Indian reservations, and a chain of snow-covered peaks that look out on wide, open valleys, glacial lakes and (if it’s clear enough) El Púlpito del Diablo, or the Devil’s Pulpit, and two bell-shaped peaks (aptly named the Campanillas). What sets el Cocuy National Park apart though is its remoteness. You won’t be surrounded by other climbers. You won’t have to stay at crowded base camps. The climbers and mountaineers that have caught onto el Cocuy highly recommend it. One called it “The best kept-secret in all of the Americas.” With over 15,000 vertical feet and 1,000 square miles of terrain to its name and two, large glaciers close by, it may well be. (Difficulty: Basic.)
You may also want to add on one of our tailor-made sub-trips, with highlights such as Lagunillas Valley, Sugar Loaf Peak and De la Plaza Lake and El Púlpito del Diablo (a massive, pulpit-shaped rock mass that looks out on the Laguna Grande de la Sierra).
