This inclusive trip combines 3 days in Cuzco, 2 days in Machu Picchu, and 2 days in the Peruvian capital of Lima before traveling to the Amazon. Yampu guides you to the rustic Tambopata Lodge in the Tambopata Candamo Reserve, where you will spend 4 exhilarating days. Here we will be able to observe Capybaras, the largest rodents in the world, tapirs, and deer in the surrounding virgin forest exploring the unique ecosystem and wildlife.

We will also visit one of the largest macaw clay licks in the world. Trip includes 3 days in Cuzco, 2 days in Machu Picchu and 2 days in Lima, the capital of Peru.

Recently, following UNESCO recommendations, Peruvian authorities have placed restrictions on the visitation of Machu Picchu, the lost Incan ruins. Currently, no more than 2,500 people daily will be allowed to visit the ruins. While these new restrictions are great for the preservation of the ruins, they may cause some difficulties in your ability to visit them, so we recommend booking with plenty of notice.

This trip can be customized to fit your individual travel dates and any specific requests you may have. Your travel consultant will prepare a customized itinerary for you. We offer a choice of 3, 4, 5-star and deluxe hotels. The Deluxe option is with the Orient Express hotels: the Sanctuary Lodge in Machu Picchu, Monasterio in Cuzco and the Park Plaza in Lima. You may also choose to upgrade to the luxury Hiram Bingham train from Cuzco to Machu Picchu.

This tour includes airfare allowance from London (UK), on non-holiday dates. You do not need to fly via London; Yampu will fly you the most direct way to your city of destination. Depending on your travel dates and proximity of travel, we will quote you the most economical surcharge from your city or country of origin.

Day 1

Overnight flight to Lima.

Day 2

Upon arrival, transfer to your hotel. Afternoon tour of Lima, one of the most important cities in South America since its founding in 1535. We will visit famous landmarks such as the San Francisco Monastery and its unique cloisters, the Plaza de Armas with the Government Palace and the Cathedral, and the Court of the Inquisition. Note: check-in is normally after 2 pm. Early check-in may be granted subject to availability (not confirmed).

Day 3

Morning transfer to the airport to take the flight to Cuzco. Upon arrival in Cuzco, transfer to your hotel. Afternoon city tour of Cuzco, visit the Korikancha Temple or Temple of the Sun and the Cathedral and its Art Museum. After your visits, you will continue to the nearby water shrine of Tambomachay (the Inca Fountains), Puca Pucara (the Red Fortress), the amphitheater of Kenko and finally the Sacsahuaman Fortress. After the tour, return to your hotel.
Note: Because of the altitude in Cuzco, we recommend that this tour be done privately at your own pace, at an additional cost of $28 per person, based on two people.

Day 4

Morning transfer to the train station. Train takes us through the Sacred Valley of the Incas up to the town of Aguas Calientes. From here, we will board a bus to the mountain-top citadel of Machu Picchu. We will then have a guided tour of the ruins. Machu Picchu, the Lost City of the Incas, was a flourishing ceremonial and agricultural site, probably the gateway to the jungle marshes of the Inca empire. The central buildings were erected with the polished stone works of the Cuzco Imperial style, though the site was probably occupied well before the Incas started their expansion. It was associated with the earth cult revolving around the coca leaf, which was a privilege of the Inca royal family and priests. You will have time to enjoy a light lunch or snack, and return to your hotel at your leisure. In the evening, we will enjoy a wonderful dinner at the hotel or in the village of Aguas Calientes.

Note: Government regulations limit the number of visitors to Machu Picchu daily. Entrance is subject to availability. Please book with plenty of notice so we may confirm your entrance to the ruins.

Day 5

Day at leisure. You may choose to return to Machu Picchu, hike Huayna Picchu or relax in the village of Aguas Calientes and its hot springs. In the afternoon, we will board the train to return to Cuzco. Upon arrival, train station reception and transfer to your hotel.

Note: Entrance tickets to Machu Picchu on this day are not included. Please contact your Yampu travel consultant if you think you would like to go back to the ruins or hike the Huayna Picchu at time of booking (subject to availability).

Day 6

Morning transfer to the airport to take us to Puerto Maldonado in the Amazon rainforest. Reception at the airport and transportation to the Wasai Maldonado Lodge, where you will receive a welcoming tropical fruit beverage. You will embark for a four-hour motorboat trip up the Tambopata River to Wasai Tambopata Lodge and Research Center (box lunch en route). During the trip, we will be able to observe the local farms, while groups of birds pass over the boat. Opportunity to see families of capybaras, the largest rodents in the world. Reception and accommodation at the lodge. After a short rest, we will have a brief introductory walk in the forest nearby to learn basic principles of ecology and some wildlife natural history. Return to the lodge for dinner. After dinner, we will make our first visit to the forest to observe the nocturnal life of insects, frogs of various colors and an occasional encounter with nocturnal mammals. We will enjoy the diverse sounds of the jungle which will accompany our first night in Amazonia. Sleep in the lodge.

Day 7

Wake early (4:30 am) and travel up the Tambopata River for an hour to the Bahuaja-Sonene National Park. You will see a magical sunrise, and it is a great opportunity to see animals such as capybaras, tapirs, jaguars, and deer in the surrounding virgin forest. We will observe (from a safe distance) one of the greatest spectacles of the rainforest: Hundreds of parrots, parakeets and macaws of various species, enjoying their diet of mineral salts on a river bank. We will have a hot drink and a snack while watching birds, and go for a short walk to look for animals such as monkeys. We will return to the lodge to have a late breakfast and rest. After lunch, we will enter the verdant jungle on a special trail to observe wildlife. We will then enter the territory of peccaries, deer and others, with the possibility to hear or see their tracks, or discovering a troop of monkeys traveling through the forest in search of food. Time permitting, we will be able to enjoy a relaxing swim. After dinner, we can make another trip through the jungle, search for caimans or relax in our lodge surrounded by exotic nocturnal sounds.

Day 8

After breakfast, we will make a boat trip to the Wasai Maldonado Lodge in Puerto Maldonado, where we will relax in our bungalows and enjoy a tasty lunch. Then we will leave and travel for 20 minutes on the Madre de Dios River to the access trail to Lake Sandoval, a beautiful rainforest lake. We will hike three kilometers to the banks of the lake. There we will board a canoe to paddle around the lake, enjoying the beauty of the landscape and observing the wildlife, such as kingfishers, herons, hoatzins (unique pre-historic looking birds) and monkeys. If we are lucky, we may see the family of giant otters which live at the lake. We will have the opportunity to swim in the lake. Then it is time to begin our return hike to the Madre de Dios River to return to Puerto Maldonado. There we will stay in the modern and comfortable bungalows of Wasai Maldonado Lodge. After dinner, we will be able to rest or go around the city on foot or on bicycle. We can enjoy the pool and its cascade surrounded by verdant vegetation. Rest of the night, you are free to enjoy the night life of this welcoming city.

Day 9

Breakfast and transportation to the airport for our flight back to Lima. Upon arrival in Lima, transfer to your hotel. Afternoon shopping tour of Lima, taking you to the famous handicraft markets accompanied by our guides.

Day 10

Transfer to the airport to take the flight back home, or overlap with the add-on of your choice.
