Porto Alegre is the capital of Rio Grande do Sul, the southernmost of Brazil’s states. Located on the banks of the Guaíba River, it is a large city with a charm of its own. European colonization and easy access to other South American countries have had a marked cultural influence here. The local “gaúchos” speak Portuguese with a dialect all their own, and the farmers dress like the men of the Argentine pampas.
