The Ruta del Sol will take you along the sunny, sandy coast of Ecuador from Guayaquil to Puerto López. We stop at Cerro Blanco Reserve, a patch of dry forest that is protected between the edges of Guayaquil to Machalilla National Park. Spend a day at Machalilla National Park and visit archaeological sites dating back to 3000 B.C. as well as a boat tour to Isla de la Plata for a chance to view whales and dolphins as well as colonies of boobies and frigate birds on the island.
Day 1
Pick up at hotel in Guayaquil early in the morning to transfer to the Puerto López region at the northern end of the Ruta del Sol (Route of the Sun). En route we may stop at various archaeological sites, the nature reserve at Cerro Blanco, and several birding sites. Lunch at Hostería Farallón Dillon, known for its great local seafood. Overnight in Puerto López.
Day 2
A full day visit to the Machalilla National Park. We will visit the indigenous village of Agua Blanca, where a guide from the village will show us around and introduce us to their traditional way of life. Continue to the archaeological museum. In the afternoon we will visit the “Los Frailes” beach within the park. Overnight in Puerto López.
Day 3
Full day tour of the Isla de la Plata (Island of Silver), via motor boat. Pelicans and other sea birds can be seen during the 1.5 hour crossing; between June and September there is a very good chance of spotting whales and dolphins. Once on the island we will have a tour of the island amid colonies of boobies and frigate birds. We may see other species of birds, depending on the season. Overnight in Puerto López. Box lunch included.
Day 4
Puerto Lopez – Guayaquil or Quito
Transfer to the airport in Manta to take the flight back to Guayaquil or Quito.
