San Agustín and the Tatacoa Desert
On this Colombia tour, you’ll begin by seeing San Agustín, a UNESCO World Heritage site, located by the Alto Magdalena River in what’s now the department (or state) of Huila. San Agustín boasts the largest collection of religious monuments and megalithic sculptures in South America (from a 5,000-year-old pre-Columbian civilization), and the preservation of the details and structural components of the monuments and sculptures is almost unfathomable.
You’ll then head to the Tatacoa Desert, or the Valle de la Tristeza, where you’ll see eroded rock formations, red earth, many cacti, yellow sand dunes and one arresting landscape after another.
In San Agustín Yampu offers comfortable accommodation at Hacienda Anacaona, a two-story, colonial coffee plantation house, surrounded by flower gardens and conveniently located 3 km outside of town (on the way to San Agustín). The house offers a double room for two to four occupants, a suite for four to six and an apartment for six to ten (with bathrooms). Its roofs and stairs are made from bamboo, and its interior is decorated with eclectic antiques and assorted, quirky, everyday objects. The restaurant serves typical, local food and offers room service. Parking facilities are available.
