Day 1
Take the Andean Explorer from Cuzco to Puno. (Saturday only, all other days you need to take the flight)Fantastic train ride that takes a gentle climb to higher and cooler altitudes. The first half of the journey is dominated by the magnificent Andean mountains which tower over the deep valleys of the meandering Huatanay River. It then reaches the gentler, rolling Andean Plains, where vicuńa and alpaca can be seen. The glass-walled observation car provides the perfect opportunity to view the beautiful scenery. The journey is broken by a scenic stop at La Raya, which is also the highest point on the route. Three-course lunch included. Restaurant and bar service is available at an additional cost. Train leaves Cuzco at 8 am and arrives at Puno at 5:30 pm. Upon arrival transfer to hotel.
Day 2
(Wednesday, Saturday, or Sunday, surcharge applies other days)Transfer to the port to take a boat ride over Lake Titicaca, to visit the floating islands of Uros. Afternoon, visit to the isle of Taquile, known for its pre-Inca and Inca ruins, and Inca terraces. Continue by speedboat to Suasi Island. You will be welcomed to the island and have a tour of the property. Then you will have a relaxed BBQ Lunch. Afternoon hiking along the trails of Suasi Island, 43 hectares containing species of flora and fauna, such as the Camelids and Vizcacha. Return to the lodge for Dinner. After dinner we suggest seeing Lake Titicaca at night. The traveler can observe the South firmament with a 5’ Bushnell modern computerized telescope and the cosmology that Andean communities have developed during years. The experience ends with a moonlight bonfire. Clients wishing to depart to Suasui Island on other days may do so for a $200 per person surcharge, March and April departures are only on Wednesday and Sunday. In December and January(Rainy Season) departures are any day of the week for the $200 surcharge, In February Suasi is closed.
Day 3
Breakfast. You may customize your day as you like at the hotel but this is the recommended itinerary. Spend the morning canoeing along Lake Titicaca. We navigate around the island aboard Canadian canoes passing by a group of Totora Reeds and watching seabirds like grebes, Andean geese, black skimmers, Peruvian boobies and different species of seagulls, as well as Camelids and Vizcachas. Return to the lodge for lunch. Afternoon choose between Martha’s Cultural Cabin or Hiking Mount Mulluni.
Martha’s Cultural Cabin: Martha Giraldo, the owner of the island, runs a cultural cabin where our travelers can meet the Altiplano and Lake Titicaca ecosystem singularity, standing out human participation along the history of livestock breeding, agriculture, ceramics and textillery. The cabin counts with one of the most complete libraries with books about the Altiplano.
Hiking Mount Mulluni(additional charge): We leave the island aboard a boat towards the community of Cambría where, after a short hike out, we start the uphill to the Mulluni’s summit. We stop at the top to contemplate beautiful lake views, islands, and communities along the riverbank. After a smooth descent, we stop at Luis’ house, where we taste some local products, visit gardens and find out about the way of raising their children.
Late afternoon we suggest you enjoy the Andean Spa with a Sauna and Massage Service (note: massages cost extra) or if you still feel energetic, you may want to go bird watching. Along the lake, within the route towards Suasi Island, is locate the Lake Titicaca National Reserve, with a surface area of 37 thousand hectares that host more than 80 species of birds, 15 of mammals, 18 of amphibians, 170 of plants and 4 families of local fish. Its ecological importance has caused recognition by the RAMSAR Convention as a humid land of worldwide importance for aquatic birds. Dinner.
Day 4
Day 4: Transfer by land to Juliaca. Visit the necropolis of Sillustani, at 12,000 feet above sea level, the lagoon of Umayo and the fabulous “chullpas,” or tombs, in the shape of cylinders. Transfer to the airport to take the flight to Lima.
(Note: the transfer is a long drive on a dirt road and includes a box lunch.)
