The Chilean north with its remote Altiplano sits next to the borders of Peru and Bolivia. As one travels through this land of snowcapped volcanoes and bizarre desert, one sees strange sculpted rock formations and endless salt lakebeds where the crystallized salts look like snow on the vast desert floor. Observe the pristine lagoons of intense greenish-blue amidst the countryside of deep desert brown. Geysers fire hot fountains of steam high into the air. Adobe churches stand just as they were built when the Spanish first arrived. En route you will experience a tremendously diverse and rare mixture of wildlife: alpacas, llamas, guanacos, vizcachas, armadillos, flamingoes, wild ducks and hundreds of other species of birds. In the distance volcanoes scratch as blue a sky as you have ever seen.
Day 1
Arica
Flight to Arica. Reception at the airport and transfer to Hotel Arica. Enjoy an afternoon city tour visiting various sites, including the historic Morro Tower, the Customs Building (designed by Gustav Eiffel) and a handicraft village. Here, you will be afforded a good overview of Andean weaving and traditional ceramics.
Day 2
Lauca National Park
Fascinating full-day excursion to the Altiplano inside Lauca National Park. En route, we will pass through the Lluta Valley with ancient hillside art. Striking images of llamas and hunters stand hundreds of feet high and date back centuries. Discover firsthand pre-Inca pucaras (fortresses) and tambos (inns). Walk about the pre-Columbian villages of Putre (3,500 meters altitude) and Paranicota (4,392 meters). Traveling on toward Lake Chungara in the afternoon, we will see the snow-covered Paranicota Volcano (6,342 meters) standing starkly against a big and blue sky. Lake Chungara (4,600 meters) is one of the highest lakes in the world. Expect to see a tremendous variety of wildlife including guanacos, vicunas, alpacas, flamingoes, all sorts of birdlife, pumas, foxes, skunks and armadillos to name but a few.
