Tour Overview

South Africa’s largest city remains its financial and commercial heart. It’s in this fast-paced metropolis that the country’s radical political and social transformation is most evident – this is the ‘Rainbow Nation’ at work. It’s a heady experience, with contrasts of every kind round every single corner.

On this visit to Johannesburg, you’ll get to spend a full day touring nearby SOWETO and Pretoria. SOWETO, acronym for South Western Township, is home to over 2 million people, who, despite living in crowded and chaotic conditions, have a tangible sense of community, one which ironically, the ordered, walled, elitist northern suburbs lack.

Next it’s on to Sun City; internationally renowned as Africa’s top holiday resort. Sun City offers a myriad of different entertainment and relaxation opportunities for the entire family with its combination of golf, gambling, waterparks and world-class hotels.

Finish your trip with a classic ‘Big 5’ safari in Madikwe Game Reserve, one of South Africa’s premiere malaria-free reserves. Embark on daily drives with experienced rangers and guides as you seek out some of the country’s most exciting game.

Morning tour of SOWETO to visit the Hector Pieterson Museum, and discover the cause of the tragic riots which led to his death. Next, pass the Mandela House, and have some time to visit this fascinating little museum (own account). The journey continues to Regina Mundi Church, site of many secret underground meetings of the then banned political parties. On the drive back, pass by the largest stadium in Africa, Soccer City, host of the 2010 FIFA World Cup Final - this magnificent stadium is now nicknamed ‘The Calabash’ for its resemblance to the African Pot.

In the afternoon, begin a tour of Pretoria. Come on a cultural journey of exploration through the capital, Jacaranda City, so called for its breathtaking purple-lined streets when the jacaranda trees are in full bloom. Trace South Africa’s extraordinary history via a range of imposing, intriguing museums and monuments; beginning with the legendary Voortrekker Monument, a memorial to the early settlers. Travel on to the Kruger Museum, the private residence of President Paul Kruger of the old Transvaal Republic, and visit Church Square, surrounded by vintage buildings dating back to the turn of the century. The last stop on this city Tour are the Union Buildings, not only an architectural icon, but site of the emotionally charged scene which played out at Nelson Mandela’s joyful inauguration as president in 1994. This is precisely where South African history turned the corner.

Game drive in the Madikwe Game Reserve

Early morning game drive heads out as the sun rises and as the bush stirs to life. The ranger and tracker teams search for animals by tracking their spoor, and by listening for the tell-tale signs of activity. The middle of the day is free to relax at the hotel.

Late afternoon game drive commences as the sun burns its way towards the horizon. The animals are now getting more active, many preparing for the great hunt after dark.

Thank you for making available for us the adventure of a lifetime.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart for an exquisite 23 day Africa experience. With a little bit of careful planning my sister and I did it ALL!!! From balloon flights over the Namibian Dunes to being 8 feet from 9 lions feeding on a buffalo they had just killed in Sabi Sands to city explorations of Pretoria, Capetown and Johannesburg, we saw it all. And due to your efforts there was never a missed connection or even a slightly late connection–everyone showed up on time or even early. We never had a moments worry. We ate all the exceptional food, drank ice in our drinks and had a wonderful gastronomic, even gourmet, time without any repercussions .

I never thought we could do this without a hitch but thanks to you we did. Everyone was very compassionate helpful resourceful and accommodating.

Everything was perfect! Guides were wonderful!

Everything was perfect! Guides were wonderful! I especially loved the Chitwa Chitwa. The experiences here were fabulous, including eating dinner with a family of elephants, including a baby. From our room and the lodge we saw a herd of Hippos, crocodiles in the morning and two lions. On the drive we saw an Impala in a tree which had been killed by a lion. Then shortly thereafter we saw a leopard leap up into the tree to eat the impala. We also went to an art opening, and liked a painting so much that we decided to buy it and take it home. It was her first painting to sell and she was so happy she gave it to me. I hope in some way my trip to South Africa, may have changed this student’s life, who will now have more confidence as an artist.

The trip you set up for me was flawless.

The trip you set up for me was flawless. The guide met all my expectations. He was helpful and protective. I did learn that in Africa, time is a relative thing. I soon learned that when James told me we were one half hour from anywhere, I could count on an hour. I saw every major animal, but one, including the Black Rino, one of the most endangers specie in the Crater. I took 900 pictures. I can tell you without a doubt, that your people can take care of a person my age and should promote that fact. I loved Nxabega. However, I was prevented from going to my tent for a rest when a family of Elephants started eating the trees between the lunch area and my tent. They were all first rate camps, but Sopa was exceptional. If you wish me to fill out anything, let me know. One funny story. I needed to go to the bathroom. James asked me to wait while he drove about a half a mile to high ground, so he could watch out for animals while I attended to the problem behind his 4×4. As we get to about fifty yards from the place we planned to stop; three lions walked over the hill and past our vehicle. You would be surprised how fast the urge to go disappears under these circumstances.
