Tour Overview

The Cape Winelands is a region of award winning wines, magnificent wine farms, scenic splendor, historic towns and authentic Cape Dutch architecture. It also has an impressive selection of top of the line restaurants and is aptly known as the culinary capital of South Africa. There is far more to the Cape Winelands than exquisite food and wine, however – check out art galleries, amphitheatres, the lion park, nature and game reserves, shops, and spa and wellness centers; try a cheetah outreach program that allows you to interact with the fastest big cats, great golf courses, horse-and-carriage rides through the vineyards, picnics alongside a a dam as ducks and swans float by gracefully– the list is endless.

Travel from the winelands to Hermanus, the town which has the status of being the best land-based whale watching destination in the world. It’s home to the world’s only whale crier, who blows his kelp horn whenever he spots whales along the central sea route. It is possible to see southern right whales by boat, helicopter or even the shore.

As if that’s not enough, you can also book kayaking trips on the sea or lagoon as well as shark cage diving packages, a sure-fire adrenaline fix for adventure lovers, and nearby Fernkloof Nature Reserve offers a range of spectacular walks among the fynbos. Whether you choose to spend a day on one of the spectacular beaches or playing a round of golf, Hermanus has something for everyone.

Visit to the Harold Porter Botanical Garden

After breakfast, embark on a full day guided whale watching tour. The first stop is the Old Harbor Museum, which was proclaimed a museum in 1972; it used to provide a rocky, but safe, shelter for the small fishing boats whose owners were drawn to Hermanus.

Enjoy lunch in Hermanus while watching the whales in the bay, and then, visit a local vineyard for wine tasting before taking a scenic drive to Kleinmond for a visit to the Harold Porter Botanical Garden. Situated in the center of the coastal fynbos, where the flora is at its richest, the garden encompasses mountain slopes, deep gorges with derelict forests as well as dunes adjacent to the beach with their salt-adapted plants. Southern right whales are seasonal and usually can be spotted between June and November. That doesn't mean that Hermanus isn't a fantastic destination during the summer months though; it has beautiful beaches and wonderful scenery.

Everything was perfect! Guides were wonderful!

Everything was perfect! Guides were wonderful! I especially loved the Chitwa Chitwa. The experiences here were fabulous, including eating dinner with a family of elephants, including a baby. From our room and the lodge we saw a herd of Hippos, crocodiles in the morning and two lions. On the drive we saw an Impala in a tree which had been killed by a lion. Then shortly thereafter we saw a leopard leap up into the tree to eat the impala. We also went to an art opening, and liked a painting so much that we decided to buy it and take it home. It was her first painting to sell and she was so happy she gave it to me. I hope in some way my trip to South Africa, may have changed this student’s life, who will now have more confidence as an artist.

Can’t think of a single thing we didn’t love about the whole experience

Can’t think of a single thing we didn’t love about the whole experience. From the phone conversations with Yampu to the representatives who met us at each airport and hotel everyone was great. And the properties they set us up with?! Amazing! Their own websites didn’t do them justice. Every day was better than the day before so every day you saw me was the best day of my life.

Everything went off without a hitch

We did indeed have a wonderful trip. Everything went off without a hitch. The two drivers arranged by Yampu Tours were excellent. Wolfgang was always either early or on time. He was very helpful with suggestions on what to do and where to eat during our visit to Knisna Bay. He also went out of his way to help us get settled in, for example with trips to the grocery store. He was cheerful, professional and ready to help whenever we needed. The van and trailer were just what we needed. Andre in Cape Town was also there on time. It was a short trip to the airport, but we appreciated all his help. Thanks to Yampu Tours for helping to make our trip so successful.
