Tour Overview

Begin with a tour of Cape Town, a visit to Table Mountain and the Cape Peninsula before traveling to the Cape Winelands. This region produces award-winning wines and boasts a brilliant landscape featuring historic towns with authentic Cape Dutch architecture. Then, view the southern right whales in the village of Hermanus before heading to the Drakensberg Mountains, the highest mountain range in southern Africa. End your visit to South Africa touring the ancient battlefields of KwaZulu-Natal.

The Cape Winelands is a region of award-winning wines, magnificent vineyards, scenic splendor, historic towns and authentic Cape Dutch architecture. It also has an impressive selection of top of the line restaurants and is aptly known as the culinary capital of South Africa. There is far more to the Cape Winelands than exquisite food and wine however, check out art galleries, amphitheatres, the lion park, nature and game reserves, shops and spa and wellness centers.

Travel from the winelands to Hermanus, the town which has the status of being the best land-based whale watching destination in the world. As if that’s not enough, you can also book kayaking trips on the sea or lagoon as well as shark cage diving packages, a sure-fire adrenaline fix for adventure lovers. Whether you choose to spend a day on one of the spectacular beaches or playing a round of golf, Hermanus has something for everyone.

The Drakensberg is the highest mountain range in southern Africa, extending roughly 1,125 km (699 miles). The Drakensberg is part of the Great Escarpment and the main watershed of South Africa. The region is ideal for bird watching, horseback riding, kayaking, mountain biking, mountaineering, trout fishing, and more. It is a haven for nature lovers and those seeking a unique cultural experience. After you have spent some time in these spectacular mountains, you will have the opportunity to visit and tour the battlefields of KwaZulu-Natal. Knowledgeable guides will go through each battle, presenting and debating the strategies used, the numbers who perished and the medals and rewards won by the brave.

Tour of Hermanus

After breakfast, embark on a full day guided whale watching tour. The first stop is the Old Harbor Museum, which was proclaimed a museum in 1972; it used to provide a rocky, but safe, shelter for the small fishing boats of owners who were drawn to Hermanus.

Enjoy lunch in Hermanus while watching the whales in the bay and then visit a local vineyard for wine tasting before taking a scenic drive to Kleinmond for a visit to the Harold Porter Botanical Garden. Situated in the center of the coastal fynbos, where the flora is at its richest, the garden encompasses mountain slopes, deep gorges with derelict forests as well as dunes adjacent to the beach with their salt-adapted plants. Whales are seasonal and usually can be spotted between June and November. That doesn't mean that Hermanus isn't a fantastic destination during the summer months though; it has beautiful beaches and wonderful scenery.

Traveled June, 2014

I highly recommend Yampu as a company and Karolina in particular as an agent.

Karolina Guilcapi at Yampu Tours has provided excellent service for me and my brother on two separate trips, one to Mexico last August and, more recently, South Africa (and Botswana and Zimbabwe) last month. In particular on the South Africa trip she worked closely with me to combine and fine tune a number of their tours. I appreciated her recommendation to go to several game reserves and parks, rather than a lot of time at one. And my brother had some last minute complicated logistics (scheduling an all-day teleconference in the middle of our trip and rescheduling his flights when he missed his original flights) for which Karolina was instrumental in coordinating. I highly recommend Yampu as a company and Karolina in particular as an agent.

It is difficult to put into words how much we enjoyed our holiday

It is difficult to put into words how much we enjoyed our holiday. We were both a little nervous having heard a number of negative reports about potential problems in South Africa, but we never felt ill at ease, and the people we met were all extremely friendly and helpful. The scenery is breathtaking, and we both want to go back and explore some more. Thank you again for organizing another fantastic holiday for us!

It was the trip of a lifetime

Ted and I would like to thank you and your staff for helping us plan our trip. It was the trip of a lifetime! South Africa is such a beautiful country and we very much enjoyed all of the activities you planned. The safari was wonderful, wine country beautiful and relaxing, and the Cape Town area vibrant and so very scenic. The hotels were all great, the tour guide was knowledgeable and friendly and adapted plans to our interests, and the car transfers were all very professional. Everything went off without a hitch, which is such an amazing thing since our vacation was nearly 2 weeks long.
