Tour Overview

After touring the celebrated Delhi – Agra – Jaipur route, travel to Mumbai, India’s economic hub, before spending a few relaxing days along the waters in Kerala. In Mumbai you will feel the heartbeat of India in this powerful city as you tour its famous monuments. Then travel south to Kochi (Cochin), where you will spend a night in a luxurious houseboat along the tranquil Kerala backwaters.

Beginning in Delhi, some of the highlights you will see include the Red Fort, India’s largest mosque, Mahatma Gandhi’s memorial, the government buildings and much more. In Agra you will see the great Taj Mahal and visit the deserted city of Fatehpur Sikri en route to Jaipur and its Amber Fort.

With a captivating blend of commercial buzz, grand Victorian architecture and modern high rises, the customs and color of Mumbai create a truly multi-cultural atmosphere. Behind the veil of its modern image, the city hosts a variety of cultural and historical sites that link to its colorful past. Located one hour by boat out of Mumbai, visit the Elephanta Caves; a UNESCO World Heritage Site hosting a brilliant temple carved out of the rock. You will also see the huge iconic archway upon the harbor that is the Gateway of India, as well as the Prince of Wales Museum and the Crawford Market.

Kochi, is an interesting and small city built on a network of islands in Southern India. After touring this quaint city with its eclectic cultural past, you will embark upon the backwaters of Kerala on your own personal houseboat for a day. This area encompasses a sweeping network of over 1500 kilometers (932 miles) of natural and man-made canals, ocean inlets, 38 rivers and five large lakes that stretch irregularly along the coastline. Explore this calm world in the land of trees, where you will see swaying rice patties, lush coconut canopies, quiet beaches and local villages. After a full day and a night aboard, spend the rest of your time at leisure exploring the town of Kumarakom, set on the shores of Lake Vembanad.

In New Delhi visit the India Gate monument, followed by the grounds of the Parliament House and other extravagant government buildings. Then continue to Humayun’s Tomb, built in honor of India’s second Mughal emperor. Later visit the world’s tallest brick minaret, Qutub Minar.

Transfer to the jetty at the Gateway of India to board a boat to Elephanta Island to see the shrine cut from the hillside. This ancient stone temple is decorated with intricate sculptures of Hindu Gods. Perhaps the most glorious of them all is the Hindu Trinity, which depicts three aspects of Shiva the Creator, Preserver and the Destroyer.
Upon returning to the city, there will be time to explore and observe the Gateway of India. With four turrets and intricate latticework, the archway was constructed out of yellow basalt stone for the visit of King George V and Queen Mary in 1911, the first visit of any British Monarchs. Near the arch, find steps down to the water; there small motor launches offering short cruises of the harbor (price not included).
Moving to the old British part of town, there will be a chance to stroll through the Crawford Market and sample some of the local fruit, vegetable, and meat stands. Completed in 1869, this covered market is elegantly designed with an impressive clock tower and steeple that stands above the surrounding skyline.
Also on deck for today is a visit to the Prince of Wales Museum, an odd looking building built with a mixture of Gothic and Moorish styles. With an array of ancient Indus Valley artifacts dating to 2000 BC, and also priceless pieces of Tibetan and Nepali art, Buddhist scrolls and Tibetan bronzes. However, the most notable attraction here is the collection of over 2000 miniature paintings from India’s various art schools.

Tour of Kochi

Today visit the Jewish Synagogue of 1568, the oldest in the nation. An interesting and intimate building, the floors are delicately hand painted with willow pattern floor tiles that originated from Canton, China in the 18th century. Located in Jew Town, this area is also one of the local spice trade centers. Also visit the ancient Dutch Mattancherry Palace. Originally built by the Portuguese (in 1557), but later renovated by the Dutch (1663), the most notable feature is the astonishing murals embellished throughout the palace rooms that depict scenes from the Ramayana, Mahabharta and Puranic legends.
Another stop is taken at the St. Francis Church, which is also the oldest European built church in the commonwealth, constructed in 1503 by the Portuguese. Although his remains were transferred to Lisbon, here lies the tombstone of the famed Vasco de Gama, the first European to reach India by sailing around the Cape of Good Hope. Also pay a visit to the shore to see the amazing Chinese fishing nets in action, which are both unique and beautiful in form. Finally, cap off the evening by enjoying a traditional Kathakali dance performance.

India and Sri Lanka were an amazing combination

India and Sri Lanka were an amazing combination! The hustle of India is exciting, but also overwhelming so including Sri Lanka toward the end of our itinerary was an amazing way to relax and unwind! In India we were blown away by the service at the Deluxe hotels, and even the 4-star hotels. The hospitality in India is incredible with everyone working to make sure you are comfortable and happy. We loved the Oberoi hotels, the rooms were beautiful and the service was immaculate. The sites in India were truly amazing and we loved the elephant safaris and interactions were we were able to bathe and paint these gentle giants! During our long transfers in India our driver was pleasant, providing us with interesting facts but not overwhelming us with too many details or idle chatter. In Sri Lanka we absolutely loved the Temple of the Tooth, the atmosphere is so humbling and spiritual; absolutely a must-see! We loved the ancient site of Polonnaruwa and the lying down Buddha and the elephant orphanage at Pinnawela. We also really enjoyed climbing the Sigiriya rock fortress, although its not the best option for those who are scared of heights!

Would highly recommend your services to friends & family

Local Guides – All three guides were superb. Very knowledgeable, respectful, communicative, personable and great with kids & family. Transportation – Both very good, cautious drivers always made us feel comfortable (and safe). Both patient and punctual.Hotels – All Taj hotels were top notch & would highly recommend. Marari was unique & fun but would not recommend for those who prefer luxurious accommodation; we really enjoyed the natural environment however. Houseboat was also great! Restaurants – All Taj hotels had excellent food. To avoid illness would stick to hotel food in the future. How would you rate your whole trip? Excellent for education. Great overall experience. Was very happy with Yampu itinerary and ease of everything. General Comments – Would highly recommend your services to friends & family.
