Bajos del Toro - Arenal - Danaus Ecological Center Nature Walk

At the appropriate time, you will be met at your hotel and privately transferred to your hotel in Arenal (90 km / 56 miles, approx. 3-hours). Please ask your Yampu Tour Consultant about upgrading to the Nayara Tented Camp.

The most popular and well-recognized of Costa Rica's volcanoes is the Arenal Volcano, a symmetrical cone-shaped volcano that dominates the fertile landscape of Arenal Volcano National Park.

En route Cultural & Danaus Ecological Center Nature Walk Tour with Lunch

A beautiful piece of paradise awaits just 15 minutes from La Fortuna! Immersed in the warm and natural habitat facing the Arenal Volcano and surrounded by rivers and rainforests, we have the chance to visit an organic orchard run by a local family. Here we will find, learn about, and taste some of the dozens of seasonal products growing in the healthy and fertile lands, typical of the nearby volcano. You will find a great variety of tropical fruits, tubers, and spices, and will be able to enjoy some with lunch. Another attraction of this farm is the abundance of wildlife sightings of animals that live here while you explore the many trails situated in the plantations. The mix of vegetation, forest edge, living fences and fruit trees, attracts animals such as toucans, parrots, sloths, and iguanas! The highlight of this visit is at the end of the walk when we enjoy a delicious home cook lunch prepared by the owners of the orchard followed by a fresh cup of coffee and a tasty dessert!

In the afternoon, enjoy the visit to Danaus biological reserve, a model of conservation located east of the town of La Fortuna, near Arenal Volcano National Park. Once open farmland, this reserve has been allowed to revert back to forest and is now teeming with wildlife. A main trail winds through the forest, where visitors can see a number of the 154 bird species recorded here, including cobalt-blue red-legged honeycreepers. The main trail passes by a small lake, where boat-billed herons and alligator-like caiman reside. Several slow-moving sloths live here too. Tiny native red poison dart frogs can be seen in a little forest ranario (frog farm) and many different species of butterflies' flit about the reserve. A nursery on the property propagates native trees for reforestation.

Pure Trek Waterfall Adventure & Arenal Observatory Tour

After breakfast, enjoy a waterfall canyoning & rappelling tour.
Near Arenal Volcano, experience an exhilarating adventure where you rappel down a series of 4 waterfalls and trek on trails through the pristine rainforest. You will descend the waterfalls into river canyons secured by a safety harness. No experience is necessary, but you should be in good physical condition, willing to have fun and get very wet! Bring: synthetic fabric quick drying clothes; water sandals, tennis shoes or light hiking boots; clothing change; towel. Includes: expert guide, equipment and entrance fee.

After lunch, enjoy the guided walk on trails of the property of the Arenal Observatory Lodge.

Arenal Observatory Lodge lies in the heart of one of Costa Rica's largest natural areas. Howler monkeys call from the forest and the rich volcanic soil supports primary and secondary rainforests teeming with butterflies, mammals, reptiles and 400 species of birds. Seven miles of manicured, well-marked walking, biking and horseback trail systems allow visitors to traverse the property while providing safe, easy access to breathtaking natural beauty. The trails are never crowded. There is a hanging bridge, waterfall, Cerro Chato crater lake or a hardened lava flow to explore! Your guide will help interpret the lush landscape and stop along the way to discuss the volcano, flora and fauna.

Early in the evening, enjoy the Ecotermales Hot Springs. This is a family-run hot springs resort featuring volcanically heated pools. To assure personal service, several family members attend to the needs of visiting guests. The facility offers separate changing rooms for women and men each equipped with hot showers, lockers and toilets. The subtle landscaping includes regenerating forest and attractive tropical plants.

Zipline Canopy Adventure - Coffee Plantation Visit - Curi Cancha Tour

The Monteverde Sky Tram/Sky Trek combines a ski lift ride and a zip line adventure in a cloud forest. The Sky Tram is a guided ride with short stops to observe the wonders of the cloud forest. The Sky Trek is a zip line ride between rises in the mountains that stretch 2.5 miles. This tour glides along a cable 2500 feet long at 40 miles an hour and 524 feet above the ground! Five observation towers en route rise above the trees and give exhilarating panoramic views. The tour begins with the Sky Tram bringing you up the mountain on the Continental Divide, and then you glide down on the Sky Trek zip lines. Bring: hiking shoes, jacket, insect repellent and sunscreen.

In the afternoon, enjoy Don Juan Coffee Plantation tour. The tour starts with an introduction into the history of coffee in Costa Rica and its importance for the culture and the economy. The life cycle of the coffee plant will be examined, from seed to plant to fruit. After this introduction you will get to learn about the picking process, and the workers who immigrate to Monteverde for the picking season. The picking season is from November until February and visitors will be encouraged to help with the picking, if they are doing a tour in that time of year. You will also learn how the pulp was traditionally removed from the coffee cherries and how the cherries are washed and separated. If visitors do a tour in the dry season, they can see how the beans can naturally dry in the sun on the large patio.

The warehouse stores the beans in big fiber sacks that allow the beans to breathe and therefore complete their aging process. The warehouse is also the place where the selection, roasting and packaging of the Don Juan coffee is done. At last you will be given the opportunity to ride in a typical ox cart, this is a nice way to experience the way of transportation of Costa Rica's past. After this you will get to taste the Don Juan coffee in the La Casona restaurant.

After the coffee tour, it is time for the chocolate tour. You will visit a chocolate processing center, here you can participate in the chocolate-making process. You will see how the small cacao beans will be turned into chocolate. The traditional methods of roasting and grinding the beans will be showed and of course you can have a try at a range of chocolates.

Early evening, enjoy Curi Cancha night tour. Curi-Cancha Reserve is located in the heart of Monteverde. It protects 86 hectares (205 acres) of primary and secondary forest. Seven kilometers of natural trails allow visitors to explore the flora and fauna of the tropical cloud forest. Walking in the forest at night is a magical experience. All of the staff and guides were excellent

We had a great holiday thank you.We saw loads of birds, pelicans, egrets, 5 or more heron species, 3 monkey species including a mutant one that was all ginger, both sloth species, lots of caimen, loads of iguana, 4 kingfisher species, raccoons, 2 sorts of toucan, 2 sorts of buzzard, Jesus Christ lizards, white ibis, a variety of hummingbirds and best of all a female and a juvenile Resplendent Quetzal. I’m sure there were more but I need to see what turns up on the photos.Manatus lodge was fabulous. Because we stayed there 3 nights, when most people stay 2, they offered us a special meal for lunch on the 3rd day. It was a traditional meal and was excellent. All of the staff was excellent.Tabacon Spa was very good but we were busy every day we didn’t get much of a chance to try their hot springs and facilities. We were a little disappointed with El Establo. The rooms were great and the hotel had obviously been built so that they all had fabulous views. The problem was it advertised tea & coffee making facilities in all rooms and ice machines on all blocks. The manager had decided the coffee machines were too much trouble and had removed them from the rooms. Free coffee was available in the restaurants and reception. Our room was in the 800 block, about a mile down a steep hill from reception. It was not practical to ring for a shuttle bus down to a restaurant or reception to collect coffee to take back to your room. We asked a maid where the ice was in our block and there wasn’t any but, without being asked, somebody turned up within minutes with a bag of ice.All of the staff and guides were excellent but especially good were Pablo on the Cano Negro tour and the driver who took us from Monteverde back to San Jose.

Best customer care & itineraries

I am recently returned from my third trip organised by Yampu, this time to Costa Rica. As always, it was fabulous from start to finish!

I do look around initially when planning my holidays but each time Karolina offers the best customer care & arranges by far the best itineraries. Value for money is excellent & they keep in constant contact before during & afterwards to make sure everything is going well.

The standard of accommodation & guides they use is superb & they actually listen to your requests as opposed to copying a generic page from their website…. Do I highly recommend Karolina & Yampu? YES!  Will I use them again? YES!  Save time & effort & just use Yampu is my travel tip  🙂
