Exploring Pura Kehen

This morning, a warm welcome awaits a Balinese home, where a traditional breakfast will be served with Balinese coffee or tea. Walk through the local farms to experience the real life of Balinese farmers working in the rice fields. Learn more about the simple and traditional irrigation system called Subak, and the process of rice growing, from planting the seedlings, to harvesting, and even cooking the rice.

The next stop is Pura Kehen, which was constructed in the 13th century. Stepping through the "Kori Agung" (stone capped gateway), there are elephant sculptures, which is unusual for a building of that age, as elephants are not a native species of Bali. Once inside the temple, there is a small compound which is guarded by a mythical "Naga" (dragon) that has a magic stone inside it. Apparently, the stone glowed red hot once the site of the temple had been decided. Following this fascinating local insight, continue to Kintamani to enjoy lunch overlooking Mount Batur, an active volcano, and picturesque Lake Batur. Return to the hotel and enjoy the remainder of the day at leisure.

Cigar Tour & Prambanan Temple

Visit Tarumartani to learn about the cigar industry. The company produces fourteen types of cigars, which are known worldwide for their uniqueness and being hand rolled. Continue to the Sultan Palace, an elegant Javanese building in the center of the city that was founded by Prince Mangkubumi in 1755. Visit the nearby Tamansari, meaning "water castle", as well. Tamansari is another princely complex that was built as the bathing place for the princess. From there, go to Kota Gede, to experience some of the local craft making, including the UNESCO recognized Batik block printing, and the works of a local silversmith.

In the afternoon, visit Prambanan Temple, the largest and most beautiful Hindu temple in Indonesia. Standing among green fields and small villages, it was built in the 10th century and is comprised of three main temples today, although it originally contained some 54 smaller temples that deteriorated over time. Just outside the temple is an open air market where performances of Ramayana ballet are put on in the evenings from May through October. Another nearby village is well known for its traditional Wayang performances, or leather puppet shows, which will also experience. Afterwards, return to the hotel for the evening.

Journey to Tanah Lot

Spend the morning on the beach before an afternoon tour to Tanah Lot. The first stop is Taman Ayun, also known as the Royal Family Temple. The temple dates back to the Mengwi Kingdom in 1634, and is surrounded by a mote, beautiful gardens and a pond. Continue to Alas Kedaton Temple, which is located in the famed "Monkey Forest" of Tabanan. Its towering nutmeg trees are unique to this area and are sacred to the Balinese people. The monkeys here are very tame and can be seen jumping up and down the temple wall, or bathing in the moat.

Continue in the late afternoon to Tanah Lot, Bali's most photographed temple. The temple is perched on a little rocky islet that is inaccessible during high tides. At sunset, when the tides are low, walk to visit the temple and watch the sun dip into the ocean. Return to the hotel after sunset.

loved Indonesia

We had a great time. We loved Indonesia most of all, our tour guide in Bali especially. The hotels were all very nice, and it was very nice to have help all along the way with Yampu. We would have been very lost without it at times I am sure.

Dealing with Yampu makes me feel like I’m dealing with friends and that’s special

I want to send the attached to you with our heartfelt thanks for all you both did to make our trip to Vietnam and Cambodia the incredible adventure that it was. We have dealt with Yampu (Kontiki) since 2005 and in three trips have not had a moment that has not been wonderful. Jose you have built a company that is second to none in travel and that now appears to be just about anywhere in the world. Your coordination and expertise is unrivaled. The letter I have attached is a quick overview of our thoughts on our Vietnam trip. Feel free to use any or all of it on your website. I have also included a few photos. You continue to amaze and please me. If we can swing anyone your way, we certainly will. Dealing with Yampu makes me feel like I’m dealing with friends and that’s special. Vermont is not that far from Ontario. Karen and I may take a road trip there sometime. If we do we’ll let you know. We’d love to visit you. Warmest Wishes
