Tour Overview

Tour the prestigious palaces and forts of the famous Delhi, Agra and Jaipur route before traveling to Jodhpur, the ‘Blue City’. Here you will find India’s most spectacular fortress-palace and the Mehangarh, which dominates the skyline from its hilltop perch. Then, journey even further into the desert to the enchanting town of Jaisalmer with its rich havelis, sandcastle-like fortress, shimmering lake and sprawling sand dunes.

This trip begins with a tour of India’s most famous cities; Delhi, Agra and Jaipur. Some of the highlights of this circuit include the Red Fort and India’s largest mosque in Delhi, Jama Masjid, as well as the Taj Mahal in Agra, Fatehpur Sikri and Jaipur’s Amber Fort. From Jaipur, you will begin your journey westward to Jodhpur.

Renowned as “The Blue City”, Jodhpur’s sprawl of block-like buildings are entirely painted blue, creating quite an unusual sight. Originally, the blue paint indicated a Brahmin household, belonging to the uppermost class of Hindu citizens. Offering the best views of this blue cityscape, the Megangarh Fort dominates the city from its perch on a nearby ridge. Sprawling over 5 kilometers (3 miles), its 36 meter (118 ft) high walls protect some of Rajasthan’s most beautiful and historic palaces. Spend an entire day exploring the interior of the fort, the sites of the city and its astounding views.

From Jodhpur, you will journey through the desert to the remote city of Jaisalmer. Rising from deep within the Thar Desert, Jaisalmer’s walls encompass an amber-hued city of cobblestone alleys and elegant mansions, complete with delicately designed lattice work and stone carvings. Spend your time here exploring the 80 meter (262 ft) tall sandcastle-like fort, admiring the magnificent sandstone Havelis (large mansions) and Gadsisar Lake. To top it all off, you will spend your evening here embarking upon the sand dunes on the back of a trusty camel.

Tour of New Delhi

Begin a morning tour of Old Delhi with a cycle rickshaw ride through the streets. Make a panoramic visit to the Red Fort, which was the most affluent fort and palace of the once reigning Mughal Empire. Then it’s on to Jama Masjid, India’s largest mosque. The final stop in Old Delhi will lead to Chandni Chowk (closed on Sunday), a lively and colorful market that was once the commercial center of the city.
Then drive to New Delhi, which will provide a stark contrast between the old and the new; a recurring theme throughout India. In New Delhi visit the India Gate monument, followed by the grounds of the Parliament House and other extravagant government buildings. Then continue to Humayun’s Tomb, built in honor of India’s second Mughal emperor. Later, visit the world’s tallest brick minaret, Qutub Minar.

Note: Yampu recommends an optional tour (price not included) to enjoy a fine dinner at the Veda Restaurant, a lavishly designed nouvelle cuisine curry house that offers a fusion of traditional Indian food with a modern spin. A second option is a visit to Akshardham, a unique, yet stunning monument that boasts 234 elaborately carved pillars, 9 decorative domes, 20 quadrangled shikhars (towers of Hindu architecture), stone elephant sculptures, and 20,000 murtis (Hindu images portraying Divine spirits). Please inquire with a Yampu travel consultant for more information.

Tour of Jodhpur

After a morning at leisure, begin an afternoon tour of the city. Exploring the second largest city of Rajasthan, first visit the Mehangarh Fort. Within its great walls (which remain scarred from cannon balls), meander through its impressive courtyards and many small palaces. Of these, the most notable palaces to visit are Moti Mahal (Pearl Palace), Phool Mahal (Flower Palace), Sheesh Mahal (Mirror Palace), Sileh Khana and Daulat Khana. Then, visit the fort’s museum, which hosts a fine selection of palanquins, howdahs, royal cradles, miniature paintings, musical instruments, costumes and furniture. Stroll to the top of the fort for great photographic views of the sprawling Blue City that lies below. Then visit the spectacular Jaswant Thada, a pure white marble memorial built to commemorate Maharaja Singh II.

Note: Yampu recommends a Jeep Safari to the nearby Guda Bishnoi Village (at added cost) to experience a sense of tribal India comes highly recommended. 25 kilometers outside of Jodhpur, find the Bishnoi community, a group of faithful worshipers of nature and the sanctity of plant and animal life. A natural desert oasis, this is a great place to experience the customs of tribal life and enjoy its beautiful natural surroundings.
