Tour Overview

Once you have taken the time to explore India’s most famous destinations throughout Delhi, Agra and Jaipur, travel to the megalopolis of Mumbai. Although it appears as a bustling modern city at first glance, its cultural and historical highlights are not to be overlooked. After exploring the city, you will continue even further south to spend a few glorious days on the sunny beaches of Goa.

This Highlight Tour begins with a visit to some of India’s most popular cities; Delhi, Agra and Jaipur. You’ll explore the Red Fort, the Taj Mahal, Fatehpur Sikri, Amber Fort and others before heading South to Mumbai.

In Mumbai, your sightseeing will begin at the imposing Gateway of India, the huge iconic archway on the water’s edge. Then, in the old British part of town, you will find the Crawford Market, an elegantly designed market with a dominating clock tower and steeple. For a trip into the past, the Prince of Wales Museum is sure to impress with a huge collection of ancient Indus Valley artifacts and priceless art pieces from Tibet and Nepal. Although Mumbai has become an immense megalopolis, these are just some of the treasures that are hidden among its high-rises that make it a classic destination to visit.

Once a jewel of Portugal’s eastern empire, Goa has retained its Portuguese heritage and has developed as a favorite tourist getaway. A land of lush green hills and miles of beautiful beaches, this is the ideal place for fun and relaxation. Although Goa is known for its good food, wine and plentiful beaches, it also boasts vanilla scented spice plantations, meandering rivers with excellent birdlife, centuries old cathedrals and white-water waterfalls. This is the perfect way to unwind at the end of your Indian odyssey.

Day Tour of New Delhi

Begin with a morning tour of Old Delhi with a cycle rickshaw ride through the streets. Make a panoramic visit to the Red Fort, which was the most affluent fort and palace of the once reigning Mughal Empire. Then it’s on to Jama Masjid, India’s largest mosque. The final stop in Old Delhi will lead to Chandni Chowk (closed on Sunday), a lively and colorful market that was once the commercial center of the city.
Then drive to New Delhi, which will provide a stark contrast between the old and the new; a recurring theme throughout India. In New Delhi visit the India Gate monument, followed by the grounds of the Parliament House and other extravagant government buildings. Then continue to Humayun’s Tomb, built in honor of India’s second Mughal emperor. Later visit the world’s tallest brick minaret, Qutub Minar.

Note: Yampu recommends an optional tour (price not included) to enjoy a fine dinner at the Veda Restaurant, a lavishly designed nouvelle cuisine curry house that offers a fusion of traditional Indian food with a modern spin. A second option is a visit to Akshardham, a unique, yet stunning monument that boasts 234 elaborately carved pillars, 9 decorative domes, 20 quadrangled shikhars (towers of Hindu architecture), stone elephants sculptures, and 20,000 murtis (Hindu images portraying Divine spirits). Morning transfer to the jetty at the Gateway of India to board a boat to Elephanta Island to see the shrine cut from the hillside. This ancient stone temple is decorated with intricate sculptures of Hindu Gods. Perhaps the most glorious of them all is the Hindu Trinity, which depicts three aspects of Shiva the Creator, Preserver and the Destroyer.
Upon returning to the city, explore and observe the Gateway of India. With four turrets and intricate latticework, the archway was constructed out of yellow basalt stone for the visit of King George V and Queen Mary in 1911, the first visit of any British Monarchs. Near the arch, can there are steps down to the water, where small motor launches offering short cruises of the harbor can be found (price not included).
Moving to the old British part of town, stroll through the Crawford Market and sample some of the local fruit, vegetable, and meat stands. Completed in 1869, this covered market is elegantly designed with an impressive clock tower and steeple that stands above the surrounding skyline.
Also on deck for today is a visit to the Prince of Wales Museum, an odd looking building built with a mixture of Gothic and Moorish styles. With an array of ancient Indus Valley artifacts dating to 2000 BC, priceless pieces of Tibetan and Nepali art, Buddhist scrolls and Tibetan bronzes can also be found. However, the most notable attraction here is the collection of over 2000 miniature paintings from India’s various art schools.

India and Sri Lanka were an amazing combination

India and Sri Lanka were an amazing combination! The hustle of India is exciting, but also overwhelming so including Sri Lanka toward the end of our itinerary was an amazing way to relax and unwind! In India we were blown away by the service at the Deluxe hotels, and even the 4-star hotels. The hospitality in India is incredible with everyone working to make sure you are comfortable and happy. We loved the Oberoi hotels, the rooms were beautiful and the service was immaculate. The sites in India were truly amazing and we loved the elephant safaris and interactions were we were able to bathe and paint these gentle giants! During our long transfers in India our driver was pleasant, providing us with interesting facts but not overwhelming us with too many details or idle chatter. In Sri Lanka we absolutely loved the Temple of the Tooth, the atmosphere is so humbling and spiritual; absolutely a must-see! We loved the ancient site of Polonnaruwa and the lying down Buddha and the elephant orphanage at Pinnawela. We also really enjoyed climbing the Sigiriya rock fortress, although its not the best option for those who are scared of heights!
