Monday
Full Day Visit to the Golden Lion Tamarin Conservation Project - Poço das Antas Biological Reserve.
This tour is for wildlife enthusiasts who want to see the Rare Golden Lion Tamarin. Note: The Park is run by scientists who have worked to save this species, they are not tour attraction experts so the park is rough around the edges and the two-hour drive to get there may not be smooth, but the sightings of this wonderful Rare Golden Lion Tamarin is fantastic. Depart Rio at 7:00am and return at 5:30pm. There is light hiking on the trails involved. One of the best-known rainforest conservation efforts in Brazil, the Golden Lion Tamarin Conservation Project (GLTCP), is a mere two-hour drive from the city of Rio de Janeiro. The Golden Lion Tamarin (Leontopithecus rosalia), a strikingly beautiful squirrel-sized primate, exists only in the lowland Atlantic Rainforest of the state of Rio de Janeiro, and is one of the most endangered primate species on Earth. All of the approximately 1000 remaining wild individuals are found in the Poço das Antas Biological Reserve and the surrounding private land. Arrive at approximately 9:00am to the reintroduction area, where Golden Lion Tamarins are being reintroduced to their natural habitat with the supervision and guidance of Golden Lion Tamarin Conservation Project technical staff. Track through the trails in the forest to observe the specimens in reintegration in their natural habitat. After the hike, visit the Environment Educational Center. Then head over to the Bom Retiro Farm for lunch. The place has an informal but warm atmosphere where travelers will have a Brazilian regional meal, buffet style. Important: A percentage of the visitors' fee will be handed out to the Golden Lion Tamarin Project. It is recommended to bring hiking boots, mosquito repellent, as well as optional gear such as Video and/or photo camera(s), penknife, raincoat, and a small backpack. Note - A contribution to the project is included in the price. Due the research character of this project, booking capacity is very limited. (Capacity Maximum of 15 travelers.) Program not available on weekend.

Rio de Janeiro - Cuiaba - Pantanal

At the appropriate time transferred to the Rio airport and fly to Cuiaba.

Upon arrival in Cuiaba be met by the guide at the airport. After a briefing on the Pantanal ecosystem and region, depart for the Araras Ecolodge. This transfer is divided into two different stages. The first is a journey on paved road along farms and cattle ranches. After reaching Pocone - a small mining town and the gateway to the Northern Pantanal - take the Transpantaneira Park Road at km 0 (108 km / 67.1 mi. from Cuiaba). This is a park road at its best, allowing us to drive above the water level, watching the flora and fauna of the Pantanal ecosystem - a photo safari with several stops along the way for photos and information.
Arrival at Araras Pantanal Eco Lodge and enjoy a welcome drink and accommodation. Later, go on a guided introductory walk through the surroundings of the lodge, as far as the Heron Lookout, a 12 m / 39 ft. high observation tower.
After dinner, take a night walk under the Southern Hemisphere sky.

Canoeing and Trekking in the Pantanal

After breakfast, take a photo safari through private dirt roads towards the Clarinho River.
Reaching its banks, board a canoe and paddle down the river, exploring the forest that grows by the riverbank and mangroves. Here lives a colony of "ariranhas" - giant river otters. With some luck, maybe spot a family playing with their babies and teaching them how to swim and fish. Ariranhas are very playful in family but fierce with other animals. Have the chance to fish for the elusive piranha, but this is not an easy task. Piranhas are famous for biting off the bait without the fisherman feeling it on the line. The "lambaris" are easier to catch and will be barbecued for lunch. If the Sentinela Camp is not accessible (depending on the weather and terrain conditions), this canoeing tour will take place on the Corixo River. In that case, return to the lodge for lunch.
In the afternoon, trek the Howler Monkey trail to the Howler Monkey Tower, our highest observation point - 25 m high - for a magnificent view of the sunset. After dinner, join a night drive in search of nocturnal animals.

Jaguar Express Tour

After an early breakfast at the lodge, depart on a photo safari towards the end of the Transpantaneira Park Road. When arriving to Porto Jofre, board a motor boat for a safari on the Cuiaba River along its banks, beaches and bays, where there may be an opportunity of spotting hundreds of birds, giant river otters, capybaras or jaguars. The chances of meeting the biggest feline in the Americas in this area during jaguar season is above 90%.
A picnic lunch will be included before returning to Porto Jofre quay at the end of the afternoon. Enjoy the return photo safari at sunset.

Pantanal Horseback Riding and Trekking

After breakfast, enjoy a horseback ride which will allow travelers to explore otherwise inaccessible flooded areas of the Pantanal plain. The Pantaneiro horse is docile and has adapted, through the centuries, to breathe while eating with its nose under the water. In this region, the horse is the Pantaneiro's best friend, a daily companion during work and leisure. Return to the lodge for lunch.
In the afternoon, trek the Rondon Trail towards the 13 m high Jabiru Stork Tower, where one can watch a Jabiru Stork nest. Return to Araras Eco Lodge for dinner and overnight.
