Tour Overview

Join us on a Tropical Hawaiian Adventure to explore the treasures of these magnificent islands of the Pacific South Seas. Rising out of the deep blue waters, the Hawaiian Islands are one of the most diverse and rewarding of the South Sea destinations. Isolated from any other landmass, these islands were created by continuous lava eruptions on one of the Earth’s “hot spots.” As plate tectonics shifted, new islands were born, making what we know today as the chain of Hawaiian Islands.

The “younger” islands are still rounded and dotted with giant, lava-gushing volcanoes reaching over 4,000m. In contrast, the “oldest” islands have become so heavily eroded that they consist of a series of razor-sharp ridges cut into endless canyons. Geological diversity is one of the wonders of these islands. Although born in total isolation, the wind and currents brought the plant and animal life that developed to fill many ecological niches. This process created a unique endemic plant and animal life with over 6,000 species that are found only in Hawaii. Arriving by outrigger canoes and traveling 1,600 km from the Marquesas, the island’s original inhabitants arrived circa 300 AD, bringing with them breadfruit, coconut palms, and taro used to establish a thriving, seafaring Polynesian culture.

On foot, our explorations lead us to the famous and hidden wonders of Hawaii. We follow trails to white, green, and black sand beaches, giant craters, frozen lava lakes, lava-sputtering cones, stunning waterfalls, and ancient rock art sites. Our paths cross through high-altitude tropical swamps, endemic cloud forests, and the stark high-altitude alpine desert of Mauna Kea, leading to incredible viewpoints that overlook the famous North Shore. There is ample time to enjoy the magnificent beaches – many known only to locals. With a little luck, we will snorkel with sea turtles and swarms of colorful tropical fish, as well as glimpse humpback whales and pods of spinner dolphins. Conditions permitting, Pele, the Hawaiian goddess of the volcano, will offer us unforgettable close-up views of erupting lava for an exceptional Tropical Hawaiian Adventure.

Pu'uhonua O Hōnaunau - Kona Coffee Tasting - Evening Manta Ray Dive

Today we will explore the fabulous “City of Refuge” or “Pu’uhonua O Honaunau” National Historical Park, which houses a picture-perfect Polynesian village perched on lava cliffs. Afterwards we will have time for some shorter walks, to tour the village and to swim or snorkel in one of the islands’ best reefs before heading to the Captain Cook Monument and the bay where he was slain. From there, we will stop at a local coffee farm to taste the world-famous Kona Coffee and see how it is produced. In the evening we will take part in a Manta Ray dive.

Take a boat ride in the late afternoon along the Kona coast to the manta viewing site. Slip into the water with your snorkel guide and float above majestic manta rays as they somersault, glide, and pivot in the light below. Manta rays are filter feeders and feed on plankton attracted to light. They have very large mouths, but no sharp teeth. Manta rays do not have tail stingers. Kona - Hilo

This morning we will head to Hilo, taking the Saddle Road, one of the most spectacular roads in the world. We will climb from sea level to 2000m, between two majestic volcanoes: Mauna Kea (4207m) and Mauna Loa (4169m), passing from tropical forest to arid desert. At Puu Huluhulu, trails lead through fascinating formations and vegetation spared by eruptions. Then we stop at Akaka Falls for an invigorating walk through an orchid clad forest to one of the most beautiful waterfalls. After checking into the hotel, we spend the evening at what was formally known as Uncle Billy’s. Now referred to as Kalapana Farmers Market, this is one of the most authentic Hawaiian celebrations in the remote Puna district. Live music, dance and authentic food are part of an unforgettable evening. There is also a chance to dip in the ocean hot springs and walk along the newly created black Sand Beaches (Wednesday night only). If not available, we will be visiting the Hilo Botanical Gardens. ...read less

Volcano National Park

The morning finds us at Volcano National Park, where we walk along the crater’s Rim. We explore Volcano National Park. This national park is part of Mauna Loa, the world’s largest shield volcano. This national park is remarkable as it sits on the actual hot spot where islands are continually being created, producing never-ending volcanic activity and eruptions. Trails lead through massive, cooled craters, steep banks venting sulfurous gasses, and fern-covered lava tubes. This is truly a primordial landscape, raw and still in the making. Our daytime walks will take us along Kilauea Crater’s Rim, edged with cloud forests of tree ferns and native Ohia with spectacular views. If the lava flows above ground, we may organize a walk to erupting lava. In the afternoon we head to the local Macademia Nut Farm for some great food tasting.

Optional helicopter rides over the erupting lava are also available (not included).

A ++ experience!

We used Yampu last Christmas (2017) for a 2 week trip in Argentina. From the very first email to the follow up after our trip, everything was perfect with Yampu. The hotel selection was matching our needs, the transfers between locations and airports all went very smoothly, the overall trip plan was a good balance of sightseeing, discovery and personal time. The guides were all so friendly and knowledgeable. This was a A+ experience. Our main point of contact in the USA was Christine Cronin. She did an amazing job for us. We like their services so much that we are now planning another trip with Yampu.
