Costa Rica’s National Theater was funded by a tax on coffee and completed in 1897. Recently, its ceiling mural, a tribute to the country’s coffee and banana crops, has been distinguished as one of the world’s 10 greatest ceilings in the world. The ceiling was painted by an Italian master who never visited the country. The painting is known as Allegory of the Coffee and the Bananas.
