Jose & Monica's Amazon, Galápagos & Colombia Journey | Yampu Tours

Custom Travel Experiences Since 1998

At Yampu Tours, we believe the most memorable journeys combine extraordinary destinations, authentic experiences, and seamless planning. Jose Irauzqui (President and Co-Founder) and Monica Irauzqui’s (VP and Co-Founder) recent adventure through Ecuador and Colombia reflected that approach, taking them from the heart of the Amazon Rainforest to the wildlife-rich waters of the Galápagos Islands and the vibrant culture of Medellín while showcasing some of South America’s most remarkable landscapes and experiences.

Their adventure blended luxury, wildlife, culture, and authentic local connections, creating a well-rounded exploration of two extraordinary countries.

Arrival in the Ecuadorian Amazon

Jose and Monica’s adventure began at La Selva Eco-Lodge & Retreat, one of the Ecuadorian Amazon’s premier jungle lodges.

Getting there was part of the experience. After a short flight to Coca, they traveled by motorized canoe along the Napo River, surrounded by lush rainforest scenery, before arriving at the secluded lodge deep within the Amazon.

Exploring the Rainforest

During their stay, Jose and Monica explored one of the most biodiverse regions on the planet, accompanied by expert naturalists and Indigenous guides.

Their days included rainforest walks, wildlife encounters, and opportunities to learn about the biodiversity that makes the Amazon so remarkable.

Garzacocha Lagoon & the Forest Canopy

One highlight of their stay was exploring the Garzacocha Lagoon ecosystem by canoe, offering a unique perspective on the rainforest.

They also visited observation towers rising above the forest canopy, where panoramic views provided a glimpse into the immense scale and beauty of the Amazon.

Indigenous Culture & Wildlife Encounters

Jose and Monica also visited a local Indigenous community, where they learned about Amazonian traditions, daily life, and the connection between local communities and the rainforest.

Their wildlife experiences continued with visits to parrot clay licks, remote lagoons, and flooded forests, where they searched for giant otters and other fascinating species that call the Amazon home.

Discovering the Galápagos Islands by Cruise

From the Amazon, Jose and Monica continued to the world-famous Galápagos Islands, where they explored the archipelago aboard the Endemic cruise.

Traveling between islands allowed them to experience the Galápagos’ diverse landscapes and wildlife. Guided by expert naturalists, they enjoyed snorkeling, kayaking, and paddleboarding while encountering sea lions, marine iguanas, blue-footed boobies, and giant tortoises.

Exploring the Galápagos by cruise gave them access to multiple islands and habitats, deepening their appreciation for one of the most remarkable wildlife destinations on Earth.

Extending the Adventure on Isabela Island

Following the cruise, Jose and Monica extended their Galápagos experience with additional time on Isabela Island, the largest island in the archipelago.

Here, they explored some of the island’s most fascinating natural attractions, including the famous Wall of Tears and the Tintoreras Islets, known for their abundant marine life and volcanic scenery.

The slower pace of island life gave them time to appreciate the natural beauty of the Galápagos while enjoying coastal views and wildlife encounters away from the cruise route.

Experiencing Quito Through Food and Culture

Before continuing to Colombia, the journey returned to Quito, Ecuador’s historic capital.

A culinary-focused experience then offered an opportunity to discover the city’s rich flavors, traditions, and local culture through hands-on activities and tastings. It was the perfect way to connect with Ecuador beyond its landscapes and wildlife while exploring one of South America’s most beautiful colonial cities.

A Cultural Extension in Colombia

Rather than heading home immediately, Jose and Monica extended their journey with a customized stay in Colombia.

Their adventure began in Medellín, where they explored vibrant neighborhoods, cultural landmarks, and the city’s remarkable transformation. They also experienced Colombia’s renowned coffee culture through a traditional coffee tasting and educational visit.

They also visited the scenic Santa Elena region, home to the famous silleteros flower growers, and toured orchid and hydrangea farms. These experiences offered a deeper appreciation of Colombia’s traditions, agricultural heritage, and natural beauty.

Guatapé and the Colombian Countryside

The final chapter of the journey took them to Guatapé, one of Colombia’s most picturesque destinations.

Surrounded by lakes, rolling hills, and colorful architecture, Guatapé offered a striking contrast to the rainforest and islands they had experienced earlier in the trip.

A VIP boat excursion allowed them to appreciate the region’s stunning scenery from the water, while visits to the iconic El Peñol area showcased some of Colombia’s most spectacular landscapes.

It was a fitting conclusion to an itinerary that moved across diverse experiences, countries, and ecosystems.
