Tanzania and Kenya Travel Requirements for U.S. Citizens

Planning a safari in East Africa? Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park and Kenya’s Maasai Mara offer remarkable wildlife encounters, impressive landscapes, and unforgettable heritage experiences. Before you go, understand the entry requirements and prepare with confidence.

U.S. passport holders traveling to Tanzania and Kenya must pay close attention to passport validity, visa or travel authorization applications, mandatory travel insurance, and vaccination requirements. Each country has its own regulations, so plan carefully.

Here is what you need to know before your East African adventure.

Tanzania Travel Requirements for U.S. Passport Holders

Whether your itinerary includes wildlife safaris, the landscapes around Mount Kilimanjaro, or a relaxing escape to Zanzibar, make sure your travel documents are ready before you leave.

Passport Requirements

Your U.S. passport must be valid for at least six months from your date of entry into Tanzania. It must also contain at least one unused visa page. Check your passport well before your departure date, allowing enough time for renewal if necessary.

For the latest requirements, consult the official Tanzania Immigration Visa Guidelines.

Tanzania Visa: Required

U.S. passport holders visiting Tanzania for tourism must obtain a visa, even if their itinerary involves only one entry. The visa costs US$100 and can be requested online through Tanzania Immigration.

Applying before departure is strongly recommended rather than arriving with a visa. Travelers must also have a return ticket available when entering the country.

To prepare your application, visit the official Tanzania e-Visa application portal. You can also review the Tanzania Immigration Visa Guidelines for the latest application requirements and supporting documents.

Allow sufficient time for processing and check your application status before traveling. This is particularly helpful when coordinating international flights, private transfers, safari arrangements, and other reservations.

Mandatory Inbound Travel Insurance: Required

Beginning October 1, 2026, Tanzania introduced mandatory inbound travel insurance for foreign visitors. The required insurance provider depends on whether you enter mainland Tanzania or Zanzibar.

Travelers entering mainland Tanzania must obtain the designated insurance through the National Insurance Corporation (NIC). Those entering Zanzibar must obtain coverage through the Zanzibar Insurance Corporation (ZIC).

The published insurance fee is US$44 per visitor, with coverage valid for up to 92 days. The policy covers medical emergencies, subject to its terms and conditions. Travelers are strongly encouraged to arrange the required insurance before departure.

For mainland Tanzania, visit the NIC Inbound Travel Insurance portal. Travelers entering Zanzibar should consult the Zanzibar Inbound Travel Insurance portal.

You can also review the Tanzania Embassy’s announcement on inbound travel insurance for additional information.

If your itinerary includes both mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar, confirm which policies apply to your specific entry arrangements before traveling.

Yellow Fever Vaccination

A Yellow Fever vaccination certificate may be required depending on your travel history and the countries you visit before arriving in Tanzania.

Travelers arriving from a country with a risk of Yellow Fever transmission, or following qualifying transit through such a country, may need to present proof of vaccination. The requirement does not automatically apply to each passenger departing from the United States.

If your itinerary includes connecting flights or a safari that combines several African destinations, check the requirements carefully. Transit arrangements can affect whether you need vaccination documentation.

For current guidance, consult the CDC’s Yellow Fever information and its country-specific Yellow Fever vaccination and malaria prevention recommendations.

Kenya Travel Requirements for U.S. Passport Holders

From the wildlife-rich plains of the Maasai Mara to Amboseli’s elephant herds and Kenya’s beautiful Indian Ocean coastline, Kenya offers a remarkable range of experiences. Before your safari begins, make sure you understand the country’s passport, entry authorization, travel insurance, and vaccination requirements.

Passport Requirements

U.S. passport holders traveling to Kenya must have a passport that remains valid for at least six months after their planned arrival date. The passport must also contain at least one blank page.

Check these details before beginning your travel authorization application. If your passport is close to expiring, consider renewing it before making your final travel arrangements.

For the latest requirements, visit the official Kenya Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) portal.

Kenya Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA): Required

Most international visitors, including U.S. citizens, must obtain an approved Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) before traveling to Kenya.

For a typical safari or vacation, the standard eTA is generally the appropriate option unless your itinerary requires a different authorization. The standard application fee is US$30, and processing usually takes approximately three working days. However, some applications may take longer, so apply well in advance.

Kenya also lists additional authorization options for eligible U.S. citizens. The published fees include US$300 for a one-year multiple-entry eTA and US$185 for a five-year multiple-entry eTA for American nationals. Because authorization categories, eligibility, and fees can change, confirm the available options directly through the official government portal before applying.

The application process requires a valid passport, a passport-style photograph or selfie, contact information, arrival and departure itinerary details, accommodation confirmation, and a valid payment method.

You should have these details ready before starting your application. Doing so can help prevent unnecessary delays, especially when coordinating flights and accommodation across multiple safari destinations.

Begin your application through the official Kenya eTA portal or review the Kenya Directorate of Immigration Services eTA information.

Remember that submitting an application does not guarantee approval. You must have an approved eTA before you begin your journey to Kenya.

Mandatory Inbound Travel Health Insurance: Required

Kenya has made inbound travel health insurance mandatory as part of its Electronic Travel Authorization application process. Travelers must arrange insurance covering their entire stay in Kenya, subject to applicable regulations and policy terms.

According to the published fee schedule for this article, the insurance premium is US$44 per person, plus US$8 in convenience and gateway fees. This brings the insurance-related charge to US$52 per person.

These costs are separate from the standard eTA application fee of US$30 and its additional US$4.50 gateway fee. Based on these published figures, the combined insurance and standard eTA charges total US$86.50 per person.

Travelers must purchase the insurance using the designated eTA application process before they can complete and submit the application. Travelers should review the coverage information and confirm the current payment requirements before proceeding.

For the latest application information, visit the official Kenya eTA portal. You can also consult the Kenya Ministry of Health’s Mandatory Inbound Travel Health Insurance Framework for additional background.

Since insurance requirements and fees may change, verify the current charges and coverage before submitting your application.

Yellow Fever Vaccination

Kenya may require a Yellow Fever vaccination certificate upon entry, depending on your travel history and route.

Travelers arriving from countries with a risk of Yellow Fever transmission, or transiting through such countries, should check whether proof of vaccination is necessary. The requirement does not automatically apply to every traveler arriving directly from the United States.

If your itinerary combines Kenya with Tanzania or another African destination, review the entry requirements for every country you plan to visit. The rules may differ depending on your route and previous destinations.

For the latest recommendations, consult the CDC’s Yellow Fever guidance and its country-specific vaccination and malaria prevention information.

Preparing for Your East African Safari

Once your passport, visa or eTA, and required insurance are in order, take time to review your complete itinerary before departure. Confirm your international flights, accommodation reservations, and any connecting travel arrangements, particularly if you plan to visit both Tanzania and Kenya.

It is also worth speaking with a healthcare professional or travel medicine clinic before your trip. They can provide personalized advice about Yellow Fever requirements, malaria prevention, and other medical considerations based on your destinations, activities, and travel dates.

Keep copies of your travel documents accessible throughout your journey, including your passport, approved visa or eTA, insurance information, accommodation confirmations, and return or onward ticket information.

Most importantly, recheck official government guidance before departure. Entry requirements, processing times, insurance arrangements, and fees can change, so the latest information should always take priority over previously published guidance.
