Your Guide to Upcoming UK & European Border Changes
Planning a trip to the UK or Europe? Over the next two years, new entry requirements will take effect and knowing when they start, plus how to obtain them, can make your journey far smoother.
Here’s a clear breakdown of what’s changing, when, and how you can be prepared before you travel.

- UK ETA – Electronic Travel Authorization
For visitors from visa-exempt countries (like the US, Canada, Australia, and others), the UK Electronic Travel Authorization on (ETA) is now a travel requirement. The ETA securely links to your passport. No paper needed. It’s not a visa, but a pre-travel authorization.
- EES – Europe’s Entry/Exit System (Schengen Area)
Moving across the Schengen Zone? From October 12, 2025, Europe shifts to a digital border control system.
- What changes? Passport stamps will be replaced by automatic biometric scans (facial recognition and fingerprints), recording your entries and exits digitally.
- Rollout period: Phased in over six months—full operation expected by April 9 or 10, 2026
- Why it matters: This allows real-time enforcement of the 90-day stay rule and streamlines processing—but expect potential delays during the initial rollout.
- ETIAS – European Travel Information and Authorization System
Looking ahead to travel beyond 2025? ETIAS, a pre-travel authorization requirement for the Schengen Area, starts in the last quarter of 2026.
- Purpose: Like the US ESTA, ETIAS screens visa-exempt travelers before arrival.
- Fee & validity: Estimated at €20; valid for 3 years or until passport expiry
- Transition period: Expect several months of leeway, where applying may be optional at first then followed by a requirement once it’s mandatory.
Why This Matters to You
These changes reflect a global shift toward digital border management. While they promise increased security and faster processing in the long run, they also require being informed and prepared, especially during the rollout phase.
